Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 06/07/05 04:01 PM

When i installed RA, i had to use dos version of the installer to get it installed. The game itself worked in compatiblity mode.

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 06/07/05 10:24 PM

How did you solve the problem? It might help if someone asks again.

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 06/10/05 06:09 PM

Here is how I installed it.

First put the RA CD on first CD/DVD drive.
1) On CD, there are folder named SETUP and there are dos version of the installer, install.exe. Launch it.
2) It'll start and then ask for sound card, I selected none.
3) Then it asks where to install. C:\WESTWOOD\RA
4) Files copied....
5) After install go to where you installed it.
6) Create shortcut for RUNGAME.EXE.
7) Right-click the shortcut, and select Properties.
8) Select Compatiblity tab, select Windows 2000+Run in 256 colors+run in 640x480+disable visual themes+turn off advanced text service. OK.
9) Run game via shortcut.

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 06/10/05 07:58 PM

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 06/10/05 08:09 PM

IT WORKS..........thanx...but one more question...(this game is great....) am i going to be able to do anything to listen to it..it sucks without sound...i'm just asking

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 06/11/05 03:41 PM

On the installation folder (c:\westwood\redalert) there are setup.exe application, use it to configure your sound card.
The sound itself can be choppy, etc.

Another solution:

Download 1.08 patch. http://www.sharoma.com/ral/files/ra108usp.exe. Copy the file to RA folder, doubleclick it. Then use extracted PATCH.EXE to patch it.

Now you have patched the game, create shortcut for RA95.exe. Apply following compatiblity settings to shortcut: Windows 95,256 colors,640x480,Disable themes and turn off advanced text services.

Now you should have sounds. smile

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 06/14/05 04:44 PM

....damn this is hard!!..well listen i got the patch...what do i do with it...i really apreciate all this help...(i got the patch!!!!)

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 06/14/05 05:42 PM

1) Copy the patch file ("ra108usp.exe") to your RA folder ("c:\westwood\redalert").
2) Doubleclick the patch file to start file extracting.
3) Now, on the folder there should be file named "patch.exe". Doubleclick it.
4) Wait while it patches RA. Dos screen will appear for while. Let it finish.
5) Now you have patched the game, create shortcut for file named "RA95.exe". Rightclick the shortcut and select Properties. Click Compatiblity tab. Apply following compatiblity settings to shortcut: Windows 95, 256 colors, 640x480, Disable themes and turn off advanced text services.
6) Done, launch the game by using this shortcut.

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 10/09/05 03:51 PM

How to play Westwood Red Alert Win 95 Edition game onto Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 (MS WinXPSP2) OS:

1. I have Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 (MS WinXPSP2) with all other available Updates from Microsoft Windows Update Service till October 2005. My Microsoft Office 2003 Professional with Service Pack 2 on my system… This particular PC I use only for testing purposes - is a quite old Intel Pentium Celeron 1.80GHz, Socket 478, 256 Mb SDRAM Memory, Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440, 64Mb, AGP8x VGA with 1024x768/85Hz resolution, C-Media AC97 Sound on board, DirectX 9.0c…
I try for about eight months now, to working out, how to play this great “old” game. Well, somehow (don’t ask me exact how, because I don’t remember it any more…) with all advice found over the Internet I finally make it thru it over the Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (MS WinXPSP1), but, unfortinally not on MS WinXPSP2. However, I finally, like I said, after eight months discovered by myself how to figure this problem even on MS WinXPSP2!!!

2. First of all Uninstall any previous version of Westwood Red Alert game completely, if exists… Red alert origin folder where the installation was settled onto your HDD, also. For my self, the procedure didn’t require restarting the computer…

3. Input Westwood Red Alert Installation CD into CD-ROM, do not allow Autorun (or just canceled it), just manually explore CD over Windows Explorer.

4. Locate into this CD “SETUP95” folder, right-click onto “INSTALL.EXE” file here, and click “Properties”, than click on Compatibility (Mode), and modified setting here to “Run this program into compatibility mode for: Windows 95”.
Than press “Apply” and “Ok”. Now, left-click and run the installation process thru this “INSTALL.EXE” file…

5. The moment when installation ending (Please do not install old DirectX thru the installation procedure…), Computer will ask you to restart your Computer. DON’T DO THAT!

6. Just left Computer still engaged, and go directly to your Red Alert folder onto your HDD where you install the game in the first place (my location is C:/Program files/Games/Westwood/Red Alert, or, usually C:/Westwood/Red alert).

7. Now right-click into your Windows Explorer on a blank area in the just mentioned folder, and "Sort by file type”.

8. Modified settings to all .exe(cutables) files found here into a Compatibility mode function on the same way as it was described into Figure 4. here. There will be exactly 10 .exe files here to be modified on the same way like the “SETUP95” file was need to be modified into already mentioned Figure 4. … These files are: “_SETUP.EXE”, “EDDOS.EXE”, “EDWIN.EXE”, “INSTICON.EXE”, “RA95.EXE”, “RASETUP.EXE”, “README.EXE”, “RUNGAME.EXE”, “RUNMAP.EXE”, and finally “SETUP.EXE”.

For some computers you will need also go into “Windows Explorer → Tools → Folder Options → View” and change settings to view your documents and to be able to see described .exe files in the first place: - Just click in here on the “Show hidden files and folders”, “Hide extensions for known file types” and “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)”, than press “Apply” and “Ok”.
WARNING: After all this Westwood Red Alert “workmanship” here, when it will be finally over , I strongly advice for safety reason of not to accidentally erase something important on your Computer system, that you put all this settings described here in this last paragraph as it was before this modification…

9. When you finally modified all .exe files on the way as is mentioned into Figure 8. , just come back a little bit more and modified just a few things more into “RA95.EXE” file here. If you do everything correctly, Compatibility mode for Win 95 is already activate for this file, just click and activate another few more options here just for this particular file: “Run in 640x480 screen resolution”, “Disable Visual themes” and “Turn off advanced text services for this program”. Than press “Apply” and “Ok”.

10. Finally stages of this long and boring process (apologize to its longest, but I was detailed and thorough for everybody understandings, because I’m not going to reply onto this message, probably ever…)
Now locate “C&CRA_Patch.zip” file that you can find over the Internet (14.7Kb only…), and extract and overwrite (replace the old one file with the new one…) “Thipx.32.dll” file from this zipped file into your Westwood Red Alert folder on your HDD.

11. Now locate “ra108usp.exe” file that you can find over the Internet (1.15Mb only…), place him and extracted into your Westwood Red Alert folder on your HDD. Just run the extracted “PATCH.EXE” process that it was in it, and wait till it will be finished. Finally click onto “RASETUP.EXE” (Red Alert Windows 95 Options) and activate Screen resolution here as “640x480 pixels”, and Hardware options as “Back buffer in Video Memory” and “Allow hardware filled blits”.

12. Just create Shortcut icon for “RA.95.EXE”, cut and pasted it, for example onto your Desktop and always run this game from this Shortcut. Enjoy…

13. P.S.: If you did something wrong, you will probably, when you engage the game, here just the sound and not see the picture, or vice-versa, or you will not hear and see both picture and sound – means that I strongly advice you to Uninstall everything and start installation process again from the Scratch. If it helps print these instructions on paper to simplified all this messy operation. Before I succeeded, I install this game on about eight different PC’s, a few times more and more... Be patient; Good luck…

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 10/30/05 02:11 AM

I'm unable to install Red Alert 95, I have tried changing the compatibility to windows 95 but when ever I click the autorun and select install it starts dos and there I get an error which say that setup.mix can't be found, under the error is a text message which says press any button when your done inserting the cd or esc to exit. But I can't press any keys because this dos window disables my keyboard, except for the esc button. My computer is running on Xp pro with service pack 2 installed.

TO EVERYONE WHO WANT TO PLAY "RED ALERT"
this what you have to do and it works everywere

1)put in your "redalert disk1" and then close the autorun...

3)then find "setup.exe" and right click on it and click on "properties" then click on "Compatiblity tab" and then set it to "windows 95" and click on ok...

5) after installing it you can play without problems...

Hi, I'm new here. I tried installing Red Alert (the original) & thanks a lot you guys really know your stuff & it worked on my Laptop that uses XP. Thanks a lot!!!!

However, I made some serious errors & now the AUTOEXEC.NT ended up on my desktop (silly me) & I'm trying (without success) to delete it. Can any of you tell me how to delete it? It keeps saying that it's being used by someone or other programs.

PS: It's also on my USB & I can't shake it off frown

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 07/23/06 04:02 PM

Okay guys, I tried everything u said here and nothing worked.
so now i'll give u a precise action of what i did:
1. Inserted CD1 of Red alert into the DVD/CD drive.
2. Cancled the auto run and went into explore the disk.
in this stage there were to posts with too ways, one way was like:
Go To Setup95 Folder (i went to it) and right click on setup.exe that set the complitability mode to win95 (did so) than run the install from that file. here is the problem with that: when i run the installer from that file a DOS window opened and says that the installation could not find Setup.mix (wich is found to be in the folder Setup and not in Setup95) so i tried doing the same with the Setup.exe file in the Setup folder and the same error came.

now for the second guide,
I went to explore the disk and right clicked on Setup.exe that changed the complitability mode to windos 95 and runed the file. it was loading normally the wizard (windows is prepearing the install wizard wich will guide you throught the installation) and when it finished prepearing (100%) it gave me that error: Windows 5.1 Is Currectly Running. This version of Red Alert is a Windows 95 only product.

any ideas why is both guides not working?

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 07/28/06 02:20 PM

Hey guys ive read all the help on red alert for xp but still no success.

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 02/14/08 10:47 PM

Vista doesn't support DOS games that require full-screen graphics. You have to use DosBox.

As for for the error you posted if you read this thread then you'll know how to fix it.

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 03/07/08 02:11 PM

i have installed RA successfully, but i get the same error message as 03haddrd('the procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll' )when i click on the RA95.exe file.
i did read every single post on this thread.

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 03/07/08 07:03 PM

So when you read this thread you downloaded the replacement file that fixes the error you mentioned?

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP.. - 08/22/08 05:03 AM

Dude, god knows why are you telling such lengthy tales. I ad the problem that the game could not install n even if it did, it freezed while I played it. Here is what you need to do:

1. Insert Cd and run setup, the one for windows, not DOS, but before, set the compatibility for the exe file for Win98 to install it where ever you want.

2. After you have done all that, download a patch for red alert 1 for the latest windows you can find (I found a patch for WIn NT and Win 2000) and then replace ra95.exe with it

3. Then set ra95.exe's compatibility to Win98 and enjoy playing it without any problems. I am running it as smooth as silk, without the need to play it in Dos or lower the gfx.

If you cannot find a patch, I will be happy to give it to you, inform me if you cannot find one

Re: Installing of Red Alert in XP... - 10/12/08 09:14 PM
