Windows XP and my CD Drives

I have a computer which is 3 years old wiht Win98. I reciently upgraded to Win XP. With this upgrade I found my modem did not work nor did my CD drives. I replaced the modem with a mew one, and it works now. My CD drives see the CD's in the drives, but Win XP tells me there is no data on the CD's. Is this a driver problem?

Did you do an upgrade install of XP rather then reformat the drive and a new OS installation ?!?

I've seen weird things like this occur when doing upgrades rather then a new installation.

The only thing you should try is to get the very latest chipset drivers for your motherboard, not from the manufacturer of the motherboard but from the chipset vendor directly. If you have an Intel chipset motherboard then go to intel.com and d/l the latest INF drivers. If you have a Via chipset board then get them from viaarena.com.

See what happens after this driver update and let us know

I reformatted and did a full, new install of XP.

How do i find what chipset i have?

You may be able to go to start>all programs>Accessories>system tools>system information to find out about the “System Model” and “System Manufacturer” which usually refers to the model name of the motherboard. This does not always work thou.
