do a system restore. this usually resolves the problem

Windows 2000 doesn't have system restore, that's a Windows ME and XP feature.

Windows 2000 does have SFC (System File Checker) that may help, however.

From a "Run" box type:

sfc /scannow

You may be asked for your installation media (usually your Windows 2000 CD) so be sure to have that nearby.
