Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/17/04 09:20 AM

I just recently got the Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate game from a friend after waiting for 2 years, and getting a new computer in the meantime, which runs on Windows XP professional.

After installing the game and trying to play it, the screen went black for a few seconds and returned to the original desktop screen. The readme file states it's most likely a problem with the drivers, so I update and downloaded the newest version of DirectX (mistake?)...it's still doing the same thing.

Help? Anybody know how to fix this problem?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/26/04 07:31 PM

Bad news: There isn't a fix.

I have been playing WH40k:CG since it came out for the PC, oh 5 years ago or so. Being a fan of the tabletop game, I found this a great fix for my 40k addiction when no one was around to play the real thing.

While the game had always been buggy, I had found most the time a good reboot would get it running right again. Additionally, the last patch made by Random Games (version 1.2) seemed to right alot of wrongs. In fact, I had it loaded on a couple PCs in my home that were on a network, and played some Multiplay with a couple friends and some family. It was a glorious day for the world of 40k computer games!

All good things come to an end though...

In late 2002 I repartitioned my HDD and reloaded it with WinXP Pro. I immediately started reinstalling all my favorite games. Of course, one of the first to get loaded was Chaos Gate.

I started a new campaign, arranged my Tac squad, equipped them, and jumped into the first mission, the 'artifact recovery at the forest temple' mission.

I moved my squad around to my liking, put them in overwatch, then hit the "End Turn" button. The evil Chaos Cultists started moving in, while getting blistered by a hail of bolter-fire. One of the Cultists made it to within firing range of his Laspistol, then the unthinkable happened.... a screen refresh with no error message and I was staring at my desktop.

Thinking this was just some random buggyness I started up the game again and went through all the motions I just did. Once again, when a Cultist came within range of his Pistol and opened fire, I was taken bounced back to the desktop.

Thus began my quest to get Chaos Gate to work on Windows XP. I have tried the following with NO success:
-Rebooting

-Uninstalling/Reinstalling countless times.

-Running the basic install at version 1.0.

-Running patch version 1.1 only.

-Patching to version 1.2.

-Running in Compatibility mode for Windows NT/95/98/ME/2000 (none worked).

-Looking for NT compatible patches (there are none).

-Scouring message boards and support channels/websites.

I did find out some things though. SSI has been bought by Ubisoft. Ubisoft doesn't even acknowledge the existence of Chaos Gate. Random Games isn't even on the radar anymore. Forget getting any offical support.

About 6 months ago someone put some info on a web message board basically stating that the game was not designed to work with the NT Kernel, and had known issues with NT 4.0 and Win 2000 (they had some programming background from the content of the message). The kernel for XP and 2000 are very similar, and upon reading this, my hopes were dashed.

But all was not lost...

About a month ago, I bought a new computer desk, and setup an older machine to do some studying with. As part of the computer's setup, I installed XP and as a shot in the dark, I installed Chaos Gate. It seemed to work! I was delighted to no end, and after my studying was complete, I began a new campaign in earnest.

I got all the way to Kimmera IV (I think), where you can choose to pursue secondary objectives. One of the side objectives is to attack a machine world to secure some supplies. The map is set in an Industrial setting, randomized with about 4 Chaos squads to contend with. Then the crashing started again. It was the same thing, as soon as a Cultist got within pistol range and fired, I was dumped, with no warning or error, to my desktop.

I tried reloading the game, but the same thing persisted. When a Cultist shoots a pistol on a industrial setting map, the game crashed.

Well, having come this far, I took some drastic measures. I deleted the existing partition on the old computer's HDD, partitioned the disk in half with FAT32, and loaded Windows 98SE. I got all the drivers for the machine, loaded Chaos Gate, and have only a few missions to go before I finish the game. It still locks up from time to time, but as I mentioned earlier, on Win98, a reboot fixes all ailments. Eventually, I will partition the other half of the Hard Disk with another FAT32 partition, and dual boot WinXP Pro on the second partition.

Like I said, pretty drastic. I work on computers for a living, so this is stuff that I can do easily to get this game to work right. For a less literate computer user, who has XP and can't downgrade because their new computer has no backwards compatibility, playing Warhammer 40,000:Chaos Gate is not an option.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 02/12/04 05:25 PM

I just installed Warhammer 40k again since some months! First time it was running fine! No crash no errors. But in one Mission my Favourite and most experienced squad was eleminated.
The bad thing: I had no earlier Savegames. Therefore I decided to start from the beginning and then the crashing began! I wonder if there is a setting in XP which prevents the machine to produce the Laser Graphics of that cultists' pistol! Or maybe its a DX setting. (There are games which have problems with new DirectX Versions!)
Furthermore maybe we can fix the game by finding its source code and modifying it!

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 02/14/04 05:33 AM

Here's something you can try, I know it works with Windows 2000, have yet to try it on XP but I think it should work(I got this from another site, Warlorders.com I believe). Search your PC for slayerui.dll. It should be in your Systems folder if you have the latest patches. If its not on your PC, search for it on google and download it. Then go into your the command prompt (cmd at the run prompt or its under accessories) and register it as follows.

Open a MS-DOS prompt (aka: Command Prompt) session
type in "regsvr32 %systempath%\slayerui.dll" (without the quotes) where
...%systempath% = the ENTIRE path to your SYSTEM32 directory, usually "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32" (I think it might be C:\Windows\ in XP)

After that right click on the shortcut icon for chaos gate (or any shortcut icon) and you'll see a tab that says compatibility. Go to the tab, check the box that says use compatibility mode and then either pick Windows 95 or 98, I've had more luck with 95 so far. The game is rather buggy though. Hope that helps!

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 02/15/04 08:47 AM

Has anyone had any luck making it work with XP and if not is there any way to shut down XP and run straight DOS if you have XP PRO. That may work as long as you reboot and can go into DOS from XP. Let me know please?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 02/17/04 08:33 AM

Kael,
Sorry friend, XP does not have a DOS engine. What you see when you run command.com or and MS-DOS prompt, is a emulator of DOS. There is no way to "boot to DOS" with XP, as you could with 95/98 (apart from making a dual boot partition as I mentioned above).

(Note: There is a 'recovery console' you can run in XP at boot up that looks a little like DOS, but it offers no real driver or advanced file support.)

Additionally, Chaos Gate is a DirectX based game, so it won't even run in DOS-only mode. You have to have a Win9X or above O/S running to load the Virtual-Mode drivers DirectX uses.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 02/20/04 01:24 AM

8) I can't believe i've found like minded people trying to get this game working. I just got it off amazon lol, and now the damn thing don't work frown I tried downgrading (which is never good) by installing direct x 6 that comes with it and.... it near buggered up my system!
I'm running xp home by the way. It would be nice if there was a driver working under xp that could run old games like this and bloodbowl. I couldn't even get to the menu screens with this one.
Tell me, would purchasing fire warrior be any use?? My brother, who is pretty adept in the warhammer universe, played it and said he wouldn't touch it with a barge pole:0
Any thoughts?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 04/21/04 11:20 PM

Just registered here, found this thread on Google having some trouble with... guess what... Chaos Gate! smile

Anyway, I think I fixed the problem. The game kept crashing on turn 2. I simply turned off all options in game (sound, unit animation etc) and then loaded the save. It worked! I then turned all options back on, and haven't had any troubles since.

Another tiny problem though.... The autorun screen that pops up when inserting the CD actually makes my win2000 system restart... Interesting, aint it. smile

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 04/29/04 01:55 AM

Hey guys
Glad to see so many people trying hard to get this classic game working smile
Naturally I've also been having hassles, I will be trying some of the ideas listed above, but one odd thing I found was that for me to get the game to run at all, I have to open a command window and navigate to the .exe DOS-style, I dont know why but if I just use a shortcut I get kicked back to desktop...
still having plenty of other problems, the worst being that when I hold the cursor over an enemy I get a little 'Gun Shoot' debugging pop-up telling me the co-ordinates, which also causes the game world to respond incorrectly, allowing me to walk through walls and stuff, I've found that I have to reset the computer before each level, this seems to be the only way to get any kind of playability, still sometimes get odd things (pictures of checkered flags and light-bulbs) on the top level, but that level is hardly ever actually used in the game so no biggie there...

The moral of the story is: it IS possible to run it on XP, but you have to be pretty dedicated, and I'm glad there are others like me out there smile (and keep posting any fixes\partial fixes!)

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 04/29/04 01:58 AM

Just as another aside, I'm also having a REALLY hard time finding the v1.2 patch! ALl the mirrors I can find 'hosting' it have either dead links or ftp's that wont respond...
If anyone knows a reliable location for the patch I'd leave to hear about it!

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 05/30/04 09:25 PM

I'm really annoyed about Chaos Gate not working on XP, and don't know enough to help any one, but I have an idea. You can get emulators for the PC simulating consoles like the Gameboy and nintendo. Do you think the same can be done for Windows versions?
Just a thought.
Dave.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/04/04 12:30 AM

There is a very nice app named "Virtual PC" that can be used as an emulator. It can emulate DOS and all kinds of Windows. Pretty advanced and hard to get working, but I managed to get Fantasy General running with sound and everyting! Microsoft bought the company that made it (Connectix) and renamed it to "Microsoft Virtual PC". Here's a link : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/default.asp.

Havent tried the MS version.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/07/04 10:14 PM

I used the following procedure to install Chaos Gate on WinXP.

I copied the entire CD contents into a folder on my desktop. I then double clicked on the setup icon in the new folder. The CD still has to be in the drive to play but this did get it to install. I had to change the shotcut to the game executable to Win 95/98 compatibility mode to get it to launch.

I still have the CTD issues described earlier in the thread.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/08/04 07:46 PM

I am having trouble as well. I found a better site for the 1.1 and 1.2 patch.

go here: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Galaxy/6777/cgpatch.html

If we all keep posting here and giving solutions Im sure we can get Chaos gate working. I'm going to try installing this on Windows 98 and see if it works. Not sure as to why XP is being a pain.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/09/04 08:32 AM

Im messing with chaos gate as well. I used to play it on XP decently awhile back until i started getting crashes to desktop at a certain level. Now ive reinstalled it on a different computer i built and reinstalled my save games and i can get it to play but still get the crash to desktop every single time. I dont know what level im on but its inside some spaceship. It does it even if i start a new game as well. It seems to crash after the enemy moves and its supposed to let me move again. Ive tried everything to fix it and nothing has worked. I did fix the sound problems i was having. At first my sound was all screwy and overlapping itself and just wasnt right. I just turned the hardware acceleration for the sound card down in the control panel and it seems to be fixed. Heres my computer specs, id love to be able to play this game if anyone can find out why its crashing to desktop.

2.4c Pentium 4 @ 3.3ghz

HIS Radeon 9800 pro 128mb video card
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/12/04 02:11 AM

laugh Nicely done! Now i have tow roking on my comp. I'll try the patches 1.1 and 1.2 and see if that makes them still work.

Awesome work brok!

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/14/04 12:50 AM

I tried doing the last fix shown here on a Win2000 computer, and I still get the black screen for a second, and then desktop. Is there a different method that works for Windows 2000?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/14/04 01:31 AM

Dont know bout win2000 specific, but I found that actually opening a command window and running the game thru that rather than using a shortcut makes it work, I guess because of how it's done, the console must open, and then windows thinks it's finished with it and closes it again, which closes the whole program, so by already having the command window open, it doesnt exit prematurely...
worked for me anyway smile

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/15/04 01:37 AM

I tried that, and I get exactly the same error. It seems to be a graphics error or some type - I suspect DirectX 9 not liking it.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/19/04 10:40 PM

I never get the video to run at all. What exactly do you mean by "Run chaos through the start menu"? Do you mean go start, programmes, then run the exe? When i do that I get the usual black screen then desktop.

Works fine with my Radeon 9500 pro, latest Catalyst drivers and w2k.

Anyone who got this to work with Win2k (especially if you have a radeon card) please tell me exactly how you did it.

Cheers

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/22/04 02:19 AM

Uhm, other than installing new drivers and not being able to play other games, what solution could there be? I'm unwilling to actually change my entire graphics system to play one game. Thanks for helping though smile

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/22/04 02:13 PM

I installed it by creating a shortcut to setup.exe and then ran it with compatibility mode for Win95. I don't know if you have to do that, but it worked. Then when installed, I did the same thing for WH40K.exe and it works like a charm.

Btw, you need the latest w2k Service Pack to enable the compatibility tab on the shortcuts.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/25/04 10:57 PM

When you say you "did the same thing for WH40k.exe" you mean you made a shortcut to the .exe in the "c:\chaos" directory and ran it in Win95 compatibility, right?

When I do that, I get the exact same error.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/30/04 10:07 PM

I cant even install the game, when i run H:/setup.exe it says that its not a valid win32 program (dont know if its correct im using danish windows), what should I do??

Yes, that's what I mean. Don't really know what do try then... Perhaps changing your windows resolution and colors (I use high color 16 bit and 1152x864)?

Create a shortcut to the setup.exe, place it on desktop (or something). Right click, choose compatibility tab, choose win95. Run setup.exe using this shortcut.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 07/05/04 09:20 PM

I got it to work and i have no problems running it. I actually contacted the Danish Ubisoft department and asked if we could get the source code, but it showed up that Ubisoft didn't got the rights for Chaos Gate when taking over SSI, to bad because i couldn't get any contacts, i think there is no hope for an unofficial patch... frown

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 07/14/04 11:38 PM

To all Win2k users:
"hate2loses" sollution from page 1 works perfectly!
i got a radeon 8500 and win2k service pack 4
just register the "slayerui.dll" with your system and choose win95 compatibility and play! even the resolution and color depth seems to be no problem.
thanks to all helping hands! laugh

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 07/18/04 03:45 PM

Hello all - glad to see people are still interrested in playing old games - so am I.
I was going through an old box of games the other day and guess what I found - WH40K_Chaos gate smile
Cool, if I remember correctly this is a pretty good game worthy of being played again. well so far so good, I thought to myself - but I'm so frustrated right now that I'm about to drop the hammer.
Nothing I do seems to work. I can't even get the damn thing to install, bloody irritating.
First of all it won't install on XP (I'm running the pro ver. with all recent updates). If I make a shortcut to the setup.exe on my desktop and apply win_95 compatibility to the shortcut, it starts up a command promt window which disappears in a split sec.
That's all the fun i can can get out of that. well, then I remembered I used to play Chaos gate on my old PC with win 98 - so patitioned my HD to FAT32 installing win 98 and got all the drivers working.
I was eager to try out the new configuration only to have the setup.exe give me a error message "this is not a valid win32 program". Now since I can't use compatibility in win 98 I'm lost.

So now I simply don't know what to do. I really love this game and would like to play it again, so I'm desperately hoping that someone can help me

regards from denmark

Hey guys, I've been having the same problems with Chaos Gate ( the cultists lasers ) but I cant try Brok's solution because;

A) The lowest res my desktop will go to is 800x600 not 640x480
and
B) I am on XP Home so dont have GPEdit.msc

I've tried lookinig in Regedit.msc but with no luck yet.

Brok if you're out there ( or anyone who can help ) could you lot please suggest something.

Any help is greatly appreciated. thx

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 08/04/04 10:54 PM

Eerr.. I managed to get my desktop res to 640x480 by going hell of a long way around but still have the other problem about not having GPEdit.msc

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 08/05/04 07:28 AM

Hi everyone,

You're gonna hate me for this. But, I somehow managed to install it normally on my system running on Win XP Pro and even updated with the 1.2 patch. Then, I started playing and oddly enough, I DID NOT encounter any problems!!!

I even experimented with the Chaos cultist laspistol bug and it was fine. I'm now almost halfway through the campaign (again) and it's all good so far. So, I suspect the problem might be with newer systems and drivers. My PC is a Frankenstein monster of old parts and new. I still use a 32Mb GeForce 2 MX with DirectX 9.

smile

PS. Game setting is at 1024 x 768, same as desktop.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 08/15/04 10:02 PM

I believe I have a fix for the XP users. I found this fix from another software manufacturer that their program didn't work in XP either.

After you have installed the program, click on Start and then click on All Programs
Point to the program that was installed (DO NOT click on it yet)
RIGHT click on the program icon and select Properties
A window pops up with tabs at the top, click on the tab titled Compatibility
Under Compatibility Mode, check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" Make sure the drop down box below it says Windows 95
Under Display Settings, check the boxes that say "Run in 256 colors" and "Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution"
Click on Apply
Click on OK

This seems to work for Chaos gate. Hurray!

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 08/16/04 04:52 AM

Of course, when the new Warhammer 40K game comes out, this will be a moot point to try and get this to work. I am just drooling over the screen shots!!!!!!

Now just curious, anyone have that other 40K game called Space Hulk? Ever get that to work on XP? And as I had everything stolen back in 97, I wonder if its even for sale anywhere?

I've tried this on XP Home and it doesn't work for me (I have got the patches). On the first target of opportunity map (Industrial) the game crashes half way through the enemy turn, always at the same point (it's not cultists firing doing it, they haven't crashed the game through the entirity of the first two missions). I've used the compatability mode and that doesn't seem to do anything.

I'm running WinDoctor to see if that works (I had a similar problem with a game calld Heavy Gear 2 a while back that it would crash at the end of the fourth mission unless I ran WinDoctor before playing) but if it doesn't does anyone have any ideas?

BTW: It used to do something similar on my 98SP machine, when I clicked the End Turn button on the second mission it would exit the game (this was without the patches).

[EDIT] WinDoctor didn't help. [/EDIT]
[EDIT2] Disabling all the animation etc doesn't work either: the game refuses to save the settings. What's wrong?[/EDIT2]

Can anyone help?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 08/23/04 03:37 PM

I've now tried Brok's solution (without the resolution setting: I can't get it down that far without compatibility mode) and that doesn't work either.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 08/31/04 01:05 AM

Ok, I found a quick fix for the cultist las-pistol bug in XP. however, you will lose some of the challenge in the game.

Go into the "Data" file in the chaos gate directory (you may want to back up this file first)
Open the "WeapDef" file using wordpad
Scroll down to the las-pistol values
Modify the amount of Ap it takes to use the pistol from 15 to 50
"Save as" and replace the old WeapDef file

The Chaos cultists should no longer be able to use their las-pistols, preventing the bug from occuring.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 09/04/04 12:09 PM

Hey anole328, I tried ur las pistol fix ( which sounds like it should work based on logic ) but now my whole game is messed up, none of my marines or the enemy can fire any weapons.

It might work with other versions but not mine...

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 09/15/04 12:18 PM

Just a quick note.

Kudos to all of you who are trying to make this great game work again.

I just want to say that I doubt SSI has the license over Chaos Gate. All the WH40K series games are actually licensed under Games Workshop, and knowing them, I doubt they'd release it unless they get a big profit from it...

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 09/25/04 08:14 AM

Ok guys, the new Warhammer 40K "Dawn of War" is now out. Trying to fix Chaos Gate is now not really worth the time. Get this new game! The graphics are awesome, even zoomed in close up you can see killer detail. As for the gameplay, it is good too . . . . depending. Though all the previews I read said this was NOT going to be a resource building style game (ala C&C), it still is to a degree. And so far, having only done the tutorial and 1 mission, I have not seen the massive bloodletting they say is in the game. But, it is enjoyable to play! AND . . . . it has multiplayer!

SSI does barely exist now a days, it's just a brand name used by Ubi soft (who probably own the rights to their old games as well). It sure would be nice if they bundled all old Warhammer games together and released them for XP...

The new game "Dawn of War" is ok, but has one big flaw... It's not turn based!

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 10/14/04 10:10 PM

Has anyone figured out how to get this game going if you don't have gsedit.msc or whatever its called (for Win XP)? Wallace?

The black screen is definitely a resolution thing. But the crash when the cultists are moving is still plaguing me...

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 10/18/04 02:06 AM

I registered here, mainly to thanks all those who posted in threads connected to Chaos Gate. Thanks!

Besides that:

i tried running gate on two machines. Success rate is 50%.

I was tring w2k compatibilty layer for w95.

It worked on:

AMD 1Ghz
GeForce 2 GTS
Dx SDK 9.0b Runtime: 9.0b
Sound Blaster live
NO PATCH applied

Laspistol crashed on:

PIII 933Mhz
Geforce fx5600
dx sdk 9.0b runtime 9.0c
onborad sound
NO PATCH and PATCH 1.2 no difference

I havent tried patching working version, cos if it would stopped working, i would have to kill myself. Before my brother finds out wink.

Looking at above configs, it can be matter of
1) video card - works on gf2 series
2) dx runtime - i dont think so
3) sound card - that one is somehow possible

Ill try to test it on matrox, pII 300 and dx6, and AMD 2.6 fx5950, until then please try it on some machines!

I can tell you for sure that game itself is bugged like hell - i tried running it with debug dx libries, it crashes in menu with mem leaks.

And i dont think they will release XP version - one reason is that xp sucks, other is that CG is rather old and after disbanding SSI team no one knows how was it made... sad thing.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 10/20/04 04:02 PM

what about SP2 for WinXP does it work with the above mentioned configs? ... because i donīt even get a console ... it just doesnīt start at all ... in the process view there is w40k.exe ... but thats all ... (yes i tried all above mentioned things smile but it doesnīt work ...)

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 10/25/04 10:13 AM

I'll try to summarize possible fixes for CGate on XP.

First, you MUST run setup from cd with compat mode for "Windows 95" or similar enabled in it's properties as described earlier or open registry for programs by my method before install. Otherwise, setup will fail to create needed registry keys and options in game will be unchangeable. CG keeps them in registry and cannot access them without compat mode, and can't create them w/o it in first place.

1) In "Run" dialog in Start Menu type

secedit /configure /cfg compatws.inf /db compatws.sdb

This will allow programs to modify registry, thus lowering security, but hopefully enable CG to run, because it wants to modify it on-the-fly. This will enable modifying and saving game options.

2) Install game by running setup from cd, you're no longer need to enable compat mode in it's properties. This way it will create all necessary keys in registry.

3) Go Brok way by running cg through command.com. Type in "Run" dialog gpedit.msc and click ok. Choose comp's configuration. Then expand Administrative templates and in Start menu group find parameter about "run in separate memory space" and make sure it's On. Close Group Policy window.

4) To run CG as Brok suggests type in "Run" dialog
command.com /c C:\Games\WH40K\WH40K.exe
or whatever path to CG is, checking option box "run in sep. memory space". It's unclear to me when this checkbox is enabled for modifying, so better ask Brok:).
In theory, all should work in the game, including options menu;)

Problem is, i myself plagued by problem which nobody other mentioned (probably they're just lucky): video cuts such as intro movie run ok, with sound and all, but i don't get any sound in main game menu or game mode itself. No music too. I've tried lowering HW acceleration for sound in dxdiag program or windows sound properties, tried switching from old SB 128 PCI (it's my second comp) to onboard sound - same effect. If someone knows a solution to this or have any idea, your help would be appreciated:)

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 10/25/04 04:53 PM

buy Warhammer 40k Dawn of war instead..
kickass game..
i even got it to work on win2k3 server

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 10/26/04 10:37 AM

Addition to my previous post. Solution with compatws.inf doesn't seem to work all the time, so you may want to stick to comp. mode in executable file preferences (it may mess up with running it trough command.com though) or run game in compat mode, enter options menu (to make sure it will write settings to registry), exit game and then edit preferences directly in registry (do a searsh for "random games") if need arises.
No luck with my sound problem for now.

Dawn of War is surely very good game, but it's too short!!! I've completed it already, i think addon is on it's way - the ending is kinda... promising;)

smile Hmm

I have played through DOW but it's terribly short. So I searched for other entertainement. Then I found my old Chaos Gate dosent work on Win2k, so here I am. A new game isn't a solution if you want to play with the good old one.

One of the reasons I don't play DOW is my PC is mostly ancient components running top-of-the-line drivers, but the hardware isn't up to it!

have anyone tried virtual pc? i'll tell you one thing guys...it wooooooooooooorks 8) laugh shocked

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/07/05 12:00 PM

Hi guys, i found this forum by googling, thank god! I still have a problem with playing the game and I would really appreciate for a little help here smile I followed Sneaksie's instructions, but I can't perform "secedit /configure /cfg compatws.inf /db compatws.sdb". It goes to 11% and then crashes. Obviously, in the game this is the reason why the game crashes when cultists are going to shoot. All other features in the game are just working fine, video, music and sounds.

I have Windows XP Professional (2002) with Service Pack 1

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/19/05 12:09 PM

To WRX_Rocky,
You might wanna try a www.homeoftheunderdogs.com . i've seen the game there.

Has anyone here seen this post?

http://forums.relicnews.com/archive/index.php/t-22435.html

I'm going to try it today... and if this is the price to pay to play this great game on win2k, I have no problems with it.

as a side note, I tried everything that everyone here posted and no go for me on a win2k laptop. do any others have success stories...?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 03/26/05 02:14 AM

Fantastic to see I am not the only person to still want to play this game. Even more reassuring to see I am not the only person to have had problems. Particularly with those filthy cultists.

Not being so computer literate as you chaps, however I opted for the slightly low-tech solution of acquiring an old PC and peripherals which is now on its way to me and will be set up with win 98 so I can play Chaos Gate, Panzer General, and a bunch of other games in peace.

Dawn of War may look good, but frankly I think WH40k has gone a bit shiny and playstationesque since the days of Rogue Trader. Chaos Gate has darkness and squishy cultists ago go, not to mention some great music. But then I still remember Thrud the Barbarian being in White Dwarf, so I might as well be ranting on about the merits of triceratops.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 03/26/05 11:44 PM

I agree tyrell.

Even though Dawn of war is a GREAT game.. it's like happy shiny fantasy war. Not at all like the grim and forsaken world the 40k universe are meant to be.

Anyway i also opted for buying an old computer... much easier. But what win versioon should i go for?? preferably one with nooo problems smile

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 05/08/05 03:43 PM

When i look a ctrlaltdel wh40k.exe is at processes but not at applications, it just wont start up.
I work p3 666MHz (XP), 256 MB and a whopping TNT 2

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 05/16/05 07:54 PM

'Lo all, joined this forum after finding the thread on a google search.

I've been playing the Warhammer PC games since I got my first PC some years ago, and loved every one I could get my hands on, which was all of them apart from Chaos Gate.

I managed to get my hands on it recently, after playing Dawn of War make me hanker for the old days of things like Final Liberation and Rites of War, and I installed with great anticipation.

It works, sort of.

I don't have any of the problems with crashing that have been mentioned previously in this thread, if and when it does crash it seems to be pretty random. My problem is that it's dark, really dark, dark enough that on jungle levels I can't make out the terrain. It's not just in-game either, all the menu's and cutsequences are dark. I've tried changing my video brightness, and my monitor brightness is already at max but it's made no difference, it seems like when the game launches the video sets itself to hardware default, which is pretty day.

I've tried all the compatibility modes, rolling back my video drivers and what not, but they don't make a difference. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I'm running XP Pro SP2, with a 2.6 Athlon XP, 1024mb Ram and a nVidia GeForce FX5600 with 256mb RAM

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 07/04/05 11:17 PM

That is great game, and luckily it almoust work in my computer (A64, R800Pro+Catalyst 4.12, XP Pro+SP2, 1GB RAM, WH40K CG whit 1.2 patch) whitout any trick. I can play it and even save, but game itself crash to windows randomly in battle (way too fast, just can play one round in battle). Any ideas what to do to get game stable?

Try to find some software (PowerStrip, Rivatuner?) whits let you to make quick key to brightnes or gammacontrols (I use ATITool, but it work only in ATI's card).

Edit: Additional info to crash, it crash only when cultist fire in laserpistol or when I hit cultist whit combat knife and cultist try to hit back, so I think that the fault is in cultist animation files attac animation (I tried to copy bolter stats to laspistol, but still crash). Any ideas how to replace cultist animation whit some other troops animation?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 08/16/05 09:57 AM

OMG, you people are going to love this. I don't know but Chaos Gate works perfectly fine and Im running OS Windows XP service pack 2! Heres how you get it running without tearing your PC into pieces!

1)First right click on the Wh40K.exe, then select compatibility. DONT STOP READING ITS MORE THAN YOU THINK!!!

2)Select run in "256 colors", and select run in "640x480" screen resolution.

3) Right click on your desktop, go to "display modes". Then look at either "True Color" or "High Color" for your display settings. Now write down your original display setting...somewhere?

4) Switch your display mode to "TRUE COLOR- 1024 by 768"

5) And,go to your prog. files or where ever you installed the game.(program files suggested) And Double-Click the Wh40K.exe. (duh!)

6) you might get a black screen in which you have to sort of "CLEAR the fog of war" (your mouse will come in handy as a windsheild whiper :P )

7) If you see the opening cinematic you know your good! Although "FOG OF WAR" MAY STILL APPEAR!

8)FINALLY Start your mission, and the screen should go all crappy and trippy when you enter the battle screen. To kill this and return the screen to normal "non-hippy mode".

Simply hit ALT+TAB, you will see your desktop looks like crap. Nevermind that and quickly....FAST! As you can click on the game again. BINGO! The screen is now clean of the psychadelica.

****WARNING**** Crashing will happen when the darn "Cultist" uses his laser. Or when the game feels like it?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 09/02/05 10:27 PM

So basically there is no real fix to this game on win XP.
Then thats a good job I completed the whole game when I had Win 98 :P

My problems are that on the second campaign mission or any scenario mission the game will just crash when an enemy unit moves to a certain location. The whole first mission has no problems what so ever and this includes cultists fireing their lazers.

I'm usally good at getting things working, I'll try some stuff and post here if any luck.
Well I've still got to try the game out on my new PC (That too has win XP)

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 09/11/05 06:37 PM

Im not sure if this is ok to be posted hear but I got my copy of chaos gate working fine buy putting -WINCURSOR on at the end of the target line.

But the mane point is im now at the point when you first get to use terminators and all they get is one clip of ammo and that I can not add extra items and the spaces for the extra items are all white and fussy so I can not use them.

So I was just wondering whether this was support to happen or is it another error from running it on xp.

I have also tried the other methods of getting the game to work and the same thing happens.

Any help would be nice as i wish to carry on with the campaign.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 10/19/05 02:28 AM

i think i have a problem that nobodyelse has had yet. On campaign mission 3 Kimarra IV there is a CSM with a heavy bolter looking down on the Ultras starting location. Whenever I kill the CSM the game crashes. I looked at the map with the scenario editor and apparently killing this space marine activates some kind of trigger. I don't know if this is related. I played the game through once a year ago and it worked. This is a new copy of the game and i have a new video card. I loved the game and would appreciate any help. Contact me at rhickman@uga.edu

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 11/22/05 08:01 PM

Hi guys,
I've found the solution using MS Virtual PC 2004.
I virtualized a Win98SE enviroment and Chaos Gate now runs with no errors.
Don't install the Virtual Machine Additions!!! If you do it, the Virtual Video Card doesn't work fine anymore with CG.

I feel I can use Virtual PC for every old games I have.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 12/10/05 10:21 PM

Another fix:-

Note: - Im using the 1.2 patch and running the game with windows xp but with Chaos Gate in Windows 95 compatibility mode.

If you have the problem where the game crashes when the laspistol is fired, simply take the "chaos gate" folder out of the "randomgames" folder, which you can delete. Rename the "chaos gate " folder to something with exactly 8 charachters in its name and put it in "C:\" - as simple as that.

i.e. "C:\ChsGate

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/06/06 04:43 AM

Hey Everyone!, I'm taking chaos gate into 2006!

Now I've obviously got problems like everyones else. I have the cultist laspistol problem and none of the rest it seems.

At first it wouldn't run because of Xp compatability and then it did run with just 98/ME or 95 compatability turned on.
Then I ran into the laspistol problem. I personelly think it's actually an enemy overview problem as I had this problem with chaos marines where they're just about to shoot then, zip, I'm on the desktop.

I'm on the first level and can't get through it without bumping into one enemy in overview so wot do u guys think? am I hitting the nail on th head?
I've tried Brok's sugestion with c command\ and installing it to an eight letter directory but like others my desktop only goes to 800X640 so I can't follow the intructions completely.

I had this on my old comp with windows ME and a fat32 harddrive and it worked fine then. I might try getting past the early levels without getting hit (I'm playing on verteran difficulty :p) if I take enough greandes and stuff u never know......

If someone figures something out which doesn't involve turning ur pc into a windows 98 machine to play it or would post if they had success with someones elses suggestion plz post it for everyone.

P.s. for anyone without the actually real game I'm pretty sure it was released in 1998 so I don't think it would be neccesary to put the compatability back to 95. But I'm going off the loads of 1998's on the back of the case and who know (definitly not me smile ) maybe setting it back to 95 actually helps somehow.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/06/06 10:07 AM

Tried Editing my last post but to no avail.

I'm now stuck on a target of opportunity before mission 3 (the first target of opportunity) my game keeps crashing now after the 2nd turn. someone else has said this also but I thought they were just encountering laspistols or something :p.
If everyones wondering wot I'm posting for it's just that i'm gonna try to get throught the game in its current laspistol, 2nd turn, crashyness and post tips here if I manage it.
1). run away from chaos forces on 1st target of opportunity tocheck 2nd turn crash.
2). try other targets of opportunity to see if its just one of them.
3).try mission
if all these fail then I'm stuck with a non working game and I'll have to find the effort to try all these fixes ppl have posted.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/08/06 08:13 AM

Got past the targets of opportunity, (I think its when a chaos cultist starts a turn that he's going to shoot u on that the game dies, so kill them all before they get close ppl)but the mission has a trigger that now ends my game.
So i'm stuck once again. I've tried installing it with the setup file in windows compatability mode and broks method but without my screen resolution at 640X400 as it doesn't go that low.
I might try another method when I get bored but I've lost hope.
Good for all u guys who got this game working and make sure u enjoy it for all those ppl who can't........

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/30/06 03:07 AM

Did someone try to repair the crash that occurs in the third misson (assault the chaos firebase)when u kill a chm located at the lower left corner of the base ?? I tried to use the editor and delete the trigger but it didn't work (the crash still occured), later i deleted the whole chm squad (u can't delete a single chm) but when i loaded my save and entered the combat map the chm was still there (I saved the map after making the adjustments and used the same filename).

PPL, please share your thoughts with me and help to solve this prob.

PS
I'll try to get a virtual machine with win98 up and running to play the game, wonder if it helps...

Did you try already Display Properties/Parameters/More/Adaptor/Modes? I can't guaranteed exactly names (I have Russian version of WinXP), but 640x480 is there for WinXP Pro. smile

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 02/02/06 07:10 AM

I was able to emulate a win98 system with microsft virtual PC 2004. The game works now perfect, no problems with starting and no crashes.

Here is a link to get some files need to get win98 running.
http://vpc.essjae.com/default.htm
Also it is needed to download the microsoft VPC program and a win98 iso (the VPC reads only .iso format). The VPC can use also a virtual cd for eg. created with demon tools, so other formats can be used too.

Yup yup! Virtual PC is the way to go if you want to play Chaos Gate (or alot of other older Win 9X games)!!!!!

Over two years waiting for a solution and it has arrived!

Virtual PC is VERY easy to setup with the tools Cezar listed above (though I did mine the hard way ;-))

In hindsight, Microsoft should ship their Windows Products WITH this type of software pre-installed (esp. if you are buying an upgrade).

We get to a repreive until Win-Vista... oh boy, the fun never ends! (don't worry, that won't be for another year or so, I think).

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 05/17/06 11:30 PM

It's great how this thread is still alive after all these years - I even saved it because it is virtually the ONLY website on the internet that talks about how to get this game to run under XP. Well back then I tried many of the solutions offered in the thread but to no avail. One worked to begin with but when a Cultist fired his laspistol on an industrial level it always seemed to crash.

Eventually I got fed up and sold it, but recently I wanted to play it again, so I came back to these forums to see if I could get it to work this time. So I have come on here to say this - people - if you really want to play this game on XP then Virtual PC is the way to go. I'm not saying don't try other methods - but Virtual PC will run this game without crashing, and without problems.

And that's basically it - go here if you want instructions to on how to install Virtual PC:

http://www.roudybob.net/?p=154

Then just install CG on the virtual system and BINGO! you can kick some Chaos butt!!

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 05/26/06 06:58 PM

Hi everyone!
This thread has been here over two years now, and it's still alive... Nice to see people like this game, it means it's good. I haven't bought it yet, but I'm searching. I've never played Chaos Gate before, but they say it's awesome, so I decided to try it.
I just can't keep thinking if it's worth of it. I mean, if the game doesn't work.
Is there anyone who has tried Virtual PC but it didn't work? Or has it been working with everyone?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/09/06 09:19 AM

i seem to have a problem nobody else has had, i cant even install the bloody thing in the first place.

im usin XP home service pack 2 and ive got the original cd which worked fine on my old win 98 but everytime i run the setup file i get the error:

'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.'

this happens even when i right click on the icon an run it in win95 or 98 compatibility mode and check the 'run in 256 colours' and '640x480' boxes.

ive tried runnin it in DOSbox but when i do i get an error sayin 'this program cannot be run in DOS mode' or 'illegal command: win SETUP.EXE' - even tho i dont even type 'win' i type 'setup' only.

and ive downloaded that virtual pc console and setup virtual win 95, 98 and NT (or so it seems) using the wizard but ive probably done it wrong as ive no experience in using virtual OS programs and virtual machines.

when i start the virtual machine the initial startup screens of the OS come on like youd expect them to if it were the real thing, then each time i get a message saying: 'Reboot and select proper boot device or insert Boot Media in selected boot device'

can anybody tell me where im going wrong?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/09/06 10:15 AM

ok ive downloaded the win98 files cezar posted but i didnt realise i needed a win98 iso. looks like this wont work for me after all.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 07/05/06 09:40 AM

I'm updating this thread after spending this evening fighting with the game and it's quirks, and reading the thread through. I have met no other bugs than some very brief palette blinking, the overlapping/prematurely cut off sound samples and the infamous "chaos cultists crash the game" -bug, and the fact the game needs a compatibility mode.

What strikes me as funny, is that I remember the game constantly crashing on me when I tried it a few years ago the last time (using Win2K). While originally installing the game this time around, it didn't have the cultist bug, however uninstalling the game and reinstalling it to another directory introduced the bug once again. A further uninstall/reinstall to the original "functional" directory upheld the bug, leading me to believe it is due to a fatal change the game creates in Windows registry.

There's potential in researching this, in case someone stumbling on this thread has a "virginous" OS under him and happens to know how to take and compare system snapshots of registry changes before and after a) installing the game, b) playing and exiting it and c) uninstalling it. I already spent 5 hours on making the game work and can't be bothered to do a complete OS reinstall myself :p

I'm inclined to believe other game failures on Windows 2000 are due to player using an unstable OS (sorry XP users), a normal Win2K with the latest service pack and normal MS updates doesn't seem to break the game any further. Thus, my quick, fast and dirty guide in making the game playable on at least win2K (also referencing anole328, who originally discovered the WeapDef solution):

a) Right click on your desktop -> Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Troubleshooting and set your Hardware Acceleration to None
- this might not completely eliminate graphics palette blinking, but at least reduces it to near-nonexistent.
b) Open up Start Menu -> Run... and enter "dxdiag.exe" without the quotes. From "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" -> Sound and set Hardware Sound Acceleration Level to None
- this eliminates overlapping, jittering or prematurely cut off speech in the game
c) Enable slayerui.dll, and set the game compatibility to Windows 95 or 98 (XP users already have the compatibility option without registering the dll).
d) Using WordPad, open up <your Chaos Gate directory>\Data\WeapDef.dat, use CTRL-F to find Laspistol entry, and change AP To Use from 15 to 50, finally saving the file.
- this prevents the cultists from shooting and eliminates the following game crash. The game is slightly easier in the beginning, you might want to add a few Chaos marines to affected maps to even up the odds.
- Why use WordPad instead of NotePad? NotePad might enter wrong line feeds in the file making it gibberish for the game. Similarly, ONLY SAVE AS PLAIN TEXT (this is the default option if you only change the value and then choose "Save" from File menu.

The game should now work, though you should still save often to be able to survive crashes the game does every now and then (memory leaks, not sure if it's the game programming or the OS incompatibility this time). The info i referenced is quoted under.

- 07/06/06 09:10 PM

Stop the press, the game crashes again. This time at mission five (this is 10+ hours into the game so sorry for not testing so far).

If a marine walks upstairs in this 2-stories high dungeon, the game simply quits. I believe this is a) due to pink horrors on the map, b) because there are rooms on top of eachother (though on mission 4 you can walk on bunker ceiling and go in it without trouble), c) because the upper level has all-black "building sight blocked" elements or d) because of the trigger which is released when a marine leaves the stairs.

Done testing for now, perhaps try later.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 07/07/06 08:15 AM

^^ You most probably forgot to use the v1.2 patch, because one of the bugs the patch fixes is the pink/blue horror bug, and without installing the patch the game will crash a lot when these enemies appear. I have also finished playing through the full campaign and can confirm that there are no additional problems if running under Windows 98 OS on Virtual PC. There is just a slight glitch whereby reinforcements sometimes come along which is not supposed to happen - and after mission 13 (almost the last anyway), I would advise
you not to lose any terminators, because even if you have the Crux Terminatus and replacement armour sometimes id wont let you replace 1 of them. That said I think this should ideally be run under Windows 95.

And to the above poster - animation files aren't necessary to play the game (I think they are mainly for cutscenes), so try installing without them. And for Virtual PC - your actual RAM on your comp needs to be fairly high - at least 256 IMO, otherwise you will have diffculty running CG.

Link to the patch (if fixes lots of other things too so I would definitely install it)

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 07/31/06 06:10 AM

So I finally get Chaos Gate working from Brok's post (thanks brok) but I got the the 7th mission and I encountered a new problem. Now when I go to enter any battle my screen goes black and it freezes my computer. I tried reinstalling the game, no dice. I tried to mess with the compatiblity options again but that didn't work either. Im running the game on win XP home and I was just wondering if anyone can help me? Thanks

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 08/14/06 01:11 PM

I've been wanting to play on this game for some time:

So here are my problems: I have win XP and the game wont even load up.

What do I need to download to get it to work and where can I find these things?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 08/18/06 10:00 AM

Tarquin2
1. Did you already use instructions from previous posts? This is about compatibility modes? smile
2. Did you install patch 1.2?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 09/18/06 01:28 PM

At last I try Chaos Gate on XP (before I has Win98). And I want "cultist bug". Where are you?! smile
Nothing. At all. I try to make yourself killed several moves, uses different map modes - nothing. I was suspect something more exciting. ;(
But it all was 640x480 mode! Ha! It must be resolution...
Nothing. Another "nothing" - program simply don't want to write into registry. Mmm? Ah! I forget Win98 compatibility mode!!
Yes!!! In the compatibility mode there is possible to write into registry... and I have my bug!!! Hurray!!! :)))
Hmmm... Remove compatibility mode. Options stays from my previous settings (and I can simply change it from registry :), and bug disappears again! ;(
Did anyone really need this compatibility mode? ;))))

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 10/12/06 12:31 PM

Loved CG on 98, never got it running on 2k, been avoiding XP forever. :P

XP Home on laptop, can't get it working. Manage to get it to run, no matter what I try, the cultist bug happens. However, very odd news..

XP x64, Corporate Edition - working flawlessly.

- Windows Update (I believe I'm about a month out of date, but hey. :P)
- dxdiag, turn off sound acceleration
- Copied CD to HD (CD was being flaky in my drive for some reason)..
- Enabled Win98 compat on setup.exe, installed.
- Did not patch game.
- Enabled Win98 compat on WH40K.exe, played.

Strangely, runs beautifully so far - time for me to get some bloody sleep, so I've only run the first two missions, but no problems - sound fine, video fine, animation fine, Word Bearers exploding fine, cultists shooting laspistols fine...

Go figure, the system that gives me nothing but trouble with older games (mainly due to the 64 bit goodness) runs CG great. grin God, I've missed this game.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/02/07 08:40 PM

Hi,
I am truly sorry to bump this topic again but I'm facing a rather frustrating problem : I cannot install Chaos Gate at all, even the DEMO ! I've tried many of the solutions posted here but none of them works for me.(Compatibility checks ,copying on HD,etc...)
I'm using Win Xp Home edition SP2, I hope you can help me, I really miss this game and would like to discover it anew !

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/03/07 05:56 AM

Cannot install? What happens? Does the install just hang or what?

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/03/07 07:58 PM

When I double-click on the setup file, nothing happens.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/06/07 03:57 PM

Hey guys!! I've got a solution for the "Cultist Crash Bug" (CCB)!

To avoid it : open the scenario editor, then load (where you installed Chaos Gate)/Maps/ for example Chapter1.map. But before you do the editing, click Properties on the file and un-tick the Read Only box. Then in the editor, delete ALL Cultist. You can replace them with Chaos Marines or with Chaos Dreadnoughts for a challenge.

A little help to the editor : - You can delete objects, by right-click on it, then delete/character.
- You can switch levels in the View section

If you can't delete all the Cultist, you better do the WordPad-trick, (Open the Data/WeaponDef.DAT with WordPad (not with NotePad), search for "Laspistol" and rewrite the "AP use 15" to "50" then save.) but be careful! Don't let to any Cultist hit you in close combat!! If any Cultist are near you, shoot them down at first!!

And before you ask : I've installed patch 1.2. I've played the game on 1024x768 resolution(just like the game's resolution) with 16 bit color. Compatibility mode is Win 95. In DirectX diag (Start/Run/dxdiag.exe), I've choose the "No Hardware Acceleration" at Sound Properties. In the Video Card properties, I've choose the "No Hardware Acceleration" too.

I've downloaded the slayerui.dll, but I think it's the worst mistake, that I ever made!! I thought it was for my Win XP to, but it was for Win 2000 only, where there's not compatibility mode in the Properties. Now I can't change to 256 color mode and run program only in 640x480 res. So, if someone can help me delete this wrong .dll, and get the Windows to the normal, I'll thank it!

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 01/06/07 03:59 PM

Oh, and one more thing. In the shortcut Properties/Target I've written -WINCURSOR. Thanks for that.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 03/19/07 02:20 AM

hello all. I discovered this thread a few days ago and have to say I'm glad there are others as devoted to making this work as I was. I was happy to find some very good tips here and tried them all. I love this game and couldnt believe I couldnt play it when I tried to install it last week. After much frustration at making it work I am glad to say that I finally got it working flawlessly INSIDE windows xp!! yes its possible. I am using microsoft virtual pc with windows 98SE installed. This worked like a charm. I had to try different resolutions and settings but finally have it working. I still enjoy it as much as I did when the game came out. I have tried the most recent 40k games (dawn of war, winter assault, etc.. but do not enjoy them as much as this turn based game. I really hope GW makes a new 40k using this game style. Let me know if anyone would like some specs of my machine, or anything else. this link was very helpful in setting up a win98 virtual pc setup( http://www.roudybob.net/?p=154 ) I am on the tech saavy side so it wasnt too difficult but I could see this being somewhat difficult for the beginner. I'd be more than happy to help in anyway I can. I'm glad there are others who love this game as much as I, good luck.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 04/08/07 06:35 PM

All,
I just wanted to reply and confirm that I have also been able to successfully install and run Chaos Gate within Virtual PC. I've only tried the first couple of scenarios so far, but it's been running flawlessly.
Virtual PC is available as a free download at Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx
As mentioned in previous posts, this link was very helpful in installing a virtual Win98 setup: http://www.roudybob.net/?p=154
Aside from the installation of Virtual PC and the setup of a virtual Win98 session, I haven't had to modify a single thing to get Chaos Gate to run. It installed and ran 'right out of the box' so to speak.
It appears to me that Virtual PC is a pretty elegant and straightforward solution for anyone wanting to run older programs that are not compatible with newer operating systems.
And no, I'm not a salesman for Microsoft!
I'm just happy to be able to play Chaos Gate!!!
Now, excuse me while I go outfit a few Marines and open a can of whoop a$$!!!!
grin

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 04/29/07 02:36 AM

fireship4 (among others) is right:
Simple Solution to the CultistsLaser-bug without any virtual machines:

(O) Install (or move an already installed) Game to C:\CHAOSGTE (or something like that i.e. eight capital letters directly in C:\ )

(O) Download (from http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Galaxy/6777/cgpatch.html) and install the two patches one by one (linking to the directory/file mentioned above)

(O) enjoy the game!! (no need in changing compatibility modes or screen-resolutions/-color depth)

(Works for me. That is: WinXP Pro (SP2 with all updates), DX9c, 7600 Nvidia GPU, Deskop @1280x1024x32b, Game-resolution: 1024x768)
Also tried out Virtual PC 2007 but the native experience is far better than the emulated crap. However I just began playing. Don't know the behaviour of the prog on later missions. Hope it turns out well...)

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 06/09/07 10:19 PM

Wow, I havn't been here for a while.

Anyway,
After installing this onto my own computer (which is a different computer to what I installed this onto as mentioned in my other posts) I can play the game but it runs..............not good. The sound and music keeps on skipping a few seconds ahead occasinaly, infact it does it near constantly.
You know when a guy taunts you, he pauses his animation untill his finihsed speaking - with this skipping sound a unit may say something like "You die by the.........*chaos marine shoots and the speach has allready ended*

In addition to this, the game just crashed randomly (a typical windows XP error message came up - "W40K Chaos Gate has encounted a problem and needs to close...., report error or don't send?"

Further more, any game options I set automaticaly reset after I close the options menu meaning it wont save anything I change.
The first thing I tried to change the was the resolution (displayed by the 3 pixelated blocks at the bottom of the options menu) and then I went back to the options menu as I wanted to turn the music up and thats when I noticed the setting was still at defaults.

So, does anyone want to solve these problems? laugh

System:

2.8ghz dual core processor
2GB DDR RAM (2x512MB)
2x Nvidia 7900GS grapics cards in SLI
Windows XP SP2 home eddition

My chaos gate game is version 1.001

Oh and:

Umm, are these patches for Chaos gate or for windows or something else?
I don't like to click a link and download "a patch" when I don't know exactly what it is.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 07/14/07 09:18 PM

A very easy fix for the cultist issue:

Go to your <game-install>/Data directory
Open WeapDef.dat in a text editor
Search for Laspistol
In this section change 4 to 3 under #animation
Change 2 to 0 under #number of sound effects for Firing
DELETE the two lines under it that give the file names for the sound files (something.wav)

Save the file, play the game - no cultist crashes.

Of course it will still have the occasional crash, so save often, especially before starting new missions it seems.

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 09/14/07 02:22 AM

first of all: patch to version 1.2, will stop most of the drop out of game action.
i tried to run the game on almost any computer i got hold of in the past years and i think it all depends on the graphic card.

i had it running on my old 700mhz win2ksp2 comp for years, had basically the same components in another computer with win2ksp4 and it didn't even show the start screen.

two weeks ago i used my /gf computer, 1.6ghz with xp/home an it ran perfectly.

and what happend? now i am sitting here at 2:30am trying to get to run it on win2k / xp computers, installing my whole collection of old graphic cards one after antoher... just keep trying, some day you'll succeed<g>

Re: Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate on XP - help? - 04/17/08 02:57 PM

Greetings all
i know this thread is kinda dead after all these years
but i wanted to make my contribution since i've been following it for the past couple of years in my own war to get chaos gate running on XP and i'd like to thank you all for your countless hours of frustration and lack of sleep in battleing with the same problems

at any rate heres the thing i got my self a new copy of the game about 2 days ago poped it in and it installed just fine - so far so good

i then tried booting it up and ofcause nothing work
but then i realized i had for gotten the patches
so hopped on the net but couldnt find v1.1 so figured i'd try with just v1.2 and guess what it actually ran! it was damn sweet to finally see the intro again after all these years

ofcause once i actually started playing i ran in to all kinds of bugs - obviously the cultists were one of them but changeing the WepDef AP for their guns seemed to fix that mostly (set it to 100 but some how they still seem to be able to use it on rare occations if they're really close and not doing anything else guess i'll try 200 or something instead)

but on top of that i seem to be having trouble everytime a flesh hound or pink horror (so far i've only made it to these) is suppose to be on screen and i suppect that bloodletters and potentially the bloodthirster might create the same problem - if anyone knows why or how to fix it please gimme a yell

at any rate a few things i've found worth takeing note of that noone seems to have mentioned so far
firstly im running the game on Windows XP Pro (DK Version) and somehow it'll actually run without compatibillity mode alltogether (have it switched on just in case though)

how ever i've noticed that i need to have ctfmon.exe running or the game will simply crash to desktop just before rendering any of the opening videos (ctfmon.exe is as far as i know something to do with advanced text formats or something to that effect its installed by default with MS word/office pack and the likes you can check if its running in the ctrl+alt+delete task maneger if its not then it'll usually starts up if you open anything to do with text like Internet Explorer if its installed)

also the drive i installed it on is formatted as FAT32 i dont know if this has any say but i suppect that it doesnt like to run on NTFS even with compatibillity modes - will have to look into this right now im just damn happy i can actually play the game even in a crippled state

also i noticed there was someone who had problems with editing maps to remove stuff might not have been here cant remember but in any case the maps arent loaded as you enter the mission area it self they're actually loaded around the time where you get the mission briefing this means that if you go out and edit a map you need to start up a save game from just after you finished the previous mission

since if you load one from after the mission briefing like savegames in combat or just after configurateing your squads the game will use the map saved in the savegame it self - so make a save each time you complite a mission just in case you feel like messing about with the next map

dont know if it has anything to do with anything but the copy of the game it self that i have is apparently a UK version - not sure if there are any other versions but it might be worth keeping an eye on

as for specs if anyone is interrasted in that im running a P4 3.06 Ghz / 1024DDR ram memory / Radeon X1650 series (512mb memory) / 1280x1024 32bit desktop res / DirectX 9 (a i think) / Win XP Pro (DK)

thats about all i can think of right now so if anyone actually bothered to read all this and the rest of this thread i really hope you get your game to work if you havent already

Cheers
-Uocky
