Utility to recover hdd space ?

, Hi Everyone, Wondering if there is a utility or something out there to recover space on my hard drive, Its a Western Digital 60gb with xp home? I found a wizard to recover the files that was locked up. Now need to get my space back, Thanks alot..........Ellee

So I take it these recovered files are locked or something and you can't delete them ?!?

Another thing you may want to try is to run the CHKDSK option.

1) Click on the Start button, then the Run option and type CMD into the run line and click ok or press the enter key.

2) Now use the CHKDSK /F option to fix the partition.

3) It should say something about the volume being locked and would you like to schedule a check during the next reboot cycle. Select y for yes and reboot the machine.

As for these recovered files, can you explain why you can't delete them after you recovered them please

Thanks for that suggestion,I'll try it. The Better Half did a reinstall of the OS and our old user accounts got locked away to where we could not open them. So we have new and old user accounts. The wizard has allowed us to copy our old files into our new ones but we can't delete the old ones. So basically we have two of everything .

Ah, yes, so you should have these duplicate users located under the folder named "Documents and Settings" and to tell which ones are current then view the modified date via Windows Explorer.

My guess is these old user profiles are not showing under the Control Panel applet, Users and Passwords. So Windows Explorer is the way to remove them, however, you need to have Administrator rights or logon as the local machine Administrator to do this. Also adjust the View options while under Windows Explorer to show things like Hidden and System files/folders. Be careful only to delete the duplicate user profiles or simply archive them to a CD-R or CD-RW and then delete them. However you decide should be good
