Problem Splitting .AVI files

I want to be able to slipt up large .AVI files. I have tried programs such as boilsoft's avi & mpeg slitter, and Doeasier's Easy video splitter. Both programs wont work for .avi files as they say they will. I can split up mpgs, just fine, but when I try to split an .AVI file it generates an error and crashes the program. The error is "programname".exe has generated an error and will be closed by windows.. blah blah... Both programs are supposidly capable of splitting very large .avi files and mine are not very large. I have also tried to split small .avi's but still same issue.
Has anyone else have these issues with these programs?.. and dose anyone else know of any other software that will split .avi's and actually works?..

hmmm, maybe codec related?

Use Virtualdub. Get it from www.virtualdub.org. It will do what you want
