Change of product key under W2k - 09/24/02 12:56 AM

Sometimes I get the problem of having to install W2k without the proper CD nearby. Usually, if it is urgent, I use one of the existing product keys, but afterwards, when the right CD cover/label is around I would like to correct this. Any (legal) possibility for that problem?

Using "regedit", navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion and look for "Product ID" & "Product Key" lines. But 1st I would back up my registry , because if you mistakenly key in a wrong number in either of these two registry entries , your version of windows will not be registered and will fail to boot.....So be careful.....

This is incorrect. Don't listen to "Redman2000". There is no such thing as the ProductKey reg hive in Win2K. He's thinking of the older versions of windows. There is a hive called a "DigitalID, and it's not readable by humans.
