Re: iptables GUI - 12/24/02 03:49 PM

Is there a similar program for gnome 2?

Re: iptables GUI - 12/25/02 12:02 AM

You do realize that you don't need to run this with KDE, right? All you need to do is install the necessary libs and you can run this in any window manager.

Re: iptables GUI - 12/25/02 01:43 AM

hi,

i'll try guarddog...

thanx..
maybe there still other recommendations?

Yeah, i know that, but I prefer native Gnome programs.
Anyway, I found Firestarter and it looks goood/better and it also runs on KDE with the proper gnome libraries :-)

Re: iptables GUI - 12/26/02 10:54 AM

Anyone know of any similar programs that are not dependent on having X installed (perhaps using ncurses to generate a text based UI like the kernel menuconfig program)? The reason I ask is that I've been meaning to put up a firewall on my gateway/server box for ages but since I don't know the first thing about iptables beyond simple port forwarding and masquerading I keep putting it off. I've tried a couple of premade firewall scripts but all I succeeded in doing was killing net access to the whole network (including the machine they were installed on).

(Oh, and before you ask, the reason it doesn't have X installed is mainly because it only has a monochrome monitor and graphics card. While X can be made to work in such an environment applications are optimised for resolutions much greater than 720x400 and 1 bit colour)

Re: iptables GUI - 12/26/02 07:50 PM

Well, a couple of things I might suggest then without having used it myself. One, would remote administration be feasible? If so, could you use something with an HTML-based manager (like Smoothwall, the new version supports IPTables) or just use SSH with -X and use X forwarding to run the frontend from another machine.

Re: iptables GUI - 12/31/02 06:59 PM

Remote administration certainly is feasible, I use SSH for just that purpose however X forwarding might not be since I can't think of a way to get an X based program on there without a whole horde of dependency issues caused by not having X installed. RPM would throw a fit and compiling from source would fail since it would expect X libraries to be installed. I'll definitely be checking out the HTML adminitration though, that seems like a suitable solution to the problem.

Don't need to say anything in here laugh

look at freshmeat
I saw a php one not too long ago.
You run it in your web server, it generates the rules and e-mails them to you (so you can scp it to the server and install it)

I didn't like it - but that was ages ago, it might have gotten better.

Also - I think webmin was working on one.

Try "iptables". It's a VERY nice Curses-based menu system for adding/changing/deleting rules in iptables. Very nice. I haven't used it in a while but it might just be what you're looking for.

GuardDog ROCKS !!! I will not use anything else.

Re: iptables GUI - 11/30/03 07:13 PM

just a quick query....have installed GuardDog and it's doing great, the only problem is i have to log into X as root to change my settings. According to the manual, when logged in as a normal user it should prompt you for the root password when you run it, but for me this doesn't happen, and i'm just informed that i don't have root priveleges and can't change anything.

Any suggestions on how to get the root password prompt back?

Cheers
