New Arch Linux installation media has been released to update the included XZ packages to 5.6.1-2.
Eric Engestrom has announced the availability of the fourth bugfix release for Mesa 24.0.
A new version of the AM application manager for AppImage is available. AM is an application manager that is inspired by AUR and serves as an AppImage manager, installer, and updater. It currently contains over 1800 AppImage packages and official standalone applications for GNU/Linux, which are derived from tar and zip archives.
Fedora Magazine has now also published a security alert regarding the compromised XZ packages. The Fedora Linux 40 and Rawhide distributions are both impacted by this problem.
A vulnerability in Kali Linux, affecting xz-utils 5.6.0-0.2, was triggered between March 26th and 29th. Users who updated before March 29th should apply the latest updates, while those not updated before March 26th are unaffected.
This issue with malicious code in the upstream tarballs of XZ has been fixed in packages for Arch Linux:
[ASA-202403-1] xz: arbitrary code execution
[ASA-202403-1] xz: arbitrary code execution
A security advisory concerning XZ utilities has been published for the Gentoo Linux operating system:
[ GLSA 202403-04 ] XZ utils: Backdoor in release tarballs
[ GLSA 202403-04 ] XZ utils: Backdoor in release tarballs
For both the testing branch and the unstable branch of Debian GNU/Linux, updated versions of the xz-util package are now available. It has been found that the upstream source tarballs for xz-utils, which are compression utilities for the XZ file format, have been compromised and inject malicious code into the liblzma5 library that is produced as a result of the build process.
