  1. The options are either a router to which the modem and all PCs are attached, or you have a gateway machine and share the connection out through that. The gateway won't need to be a particularly powerful beast if you go this route, but it will need to be running in order for people to access the net. What kind of security do you require on the gateway? For most home users, I really don't think that running an MS OS (such as 2K or XP) is really a problem. If it is, you can always invest in a software firewall. Using a hardware based setup and controlling access via the router really isn't going to be any different. If you don't know what you're doing with ACLs and which ports to block, it's going to be just as insecure. You'd probably find it pretty difficult to convince your ISP to provide you with 4 or 5 ADSL modems. As you've mentioned, it's also 4 or 5 times the monthly outgoing, and really isn't worth it. As for your brothers machine, drilling some holes through your walls and running a long cable is the easiest thing to do. After that you're into the wireless realm, but the price starts to go up, and you have security issues that need to be resolved.
  2. And don't forget the voice taunts. The number of times I made people jump with the "Behind you!" taunt, before unloading into them is too high to count
  3. Call of Duty is pretty good if a little short. I'm currently playing XIII. It's a cell-shaded FPS done with the Unreal engine (not sure which version). It's very comic-booky with 'boom' and 'whoosh' text appearing every now and then. All in all I'm quite enjoying it so far

    reformatting XP Home machine

Just boot from the XP CD, and insert the 98 CD when the setup program asks you. Much easier As for the cable modem, it should be pretty straightforwards. They're normally all automatically configured, but you could always check the TCP/IP settings and make a note of them if any of the addresses are actually specified.

    advice on raid/storage setup?

Well, for stability, RAID 0 is worhtless. I'm sure you know that if one drive fails, you lose everything on both drives. For stability, you might be better off with RAID 1 on the two of the drives. That way you'll get some redundancy if one drive fails. You could use this for Windows and your apps. Your games and other not so critical files could be put onto a RAID 0 array made of the other pair of drives. I guess it will really depend on how much disk space you need for each.

proof that there are stoners working at M$

I don't know what you're getting at either. Is there a problem with the graphics? Or do you think that MS should redesign all the icons and graphics every time they release a new OS?

I seem to have broken my ICS

It's OK, I fixed it Realised I should have been setting up ICS on the broadband NIC rather than the LAN NIC. D'oh!

I seem to have broken my ICS

    I've done some more tests, and here's what I have now... PC1 (server) WinXP - all patches - 192.168.0.1 PC2 (client) Win2K - almost all patches - 192.168.0.2 PC3 (client) WinXP - no patches - 192.168.0.3 PC1 can now ping PC2 and PC3. PC2 can ping PC3 but not PC1. PC3 can ping PC2 but not PC1. I've enabled logging on PC1, and here what I get. Hopefully the formatting hasn't gotten too mangled: Code: date time action protocol src-ip dst-ip src-port dst-port size tcpflags tcpsyn tcpack tcpwin icmptype icmpcode info2003-10-19 19:41:22 DROP UDP 192.168.0.1 239.255.255.250 1900 1900 436 - - - - - - -2003-10-19 19:41:22 DROP UDP 192.168.0.1 239.255.255.250 1900 1900 442 - - - - - - -2003-10-19 19:42:15 DROP UDP 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 1042 53 62 - - - - - - -2003-10-19 19:42:16 DROP UDP 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 1042 53 62 - - - - - - -2003-10-19 19:42:18 DROP UDP 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 1042 53 62 - - - - - - -2003-10-19 19:42:20 DROP UDP 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 1042 53 62 - - - - - - -2003-10-19 19:42:24 DROP UDP 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 1042 53 62 - - - - - - -2003-10-19 19:42:32 DROP UDP 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 1043 53 68 - - - - - - -2003-10-19 19:42:33 DROP UDP 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 1043 53 68 - - - - - - -2003-10-19 19:42:34 DROP UDP 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 1043 53 68 - - - - - - - The first two entries are pings, the others are requests for a web page. So for some reason my machine is just dropping the incoming requests from my LAN. I'm a bit stumped about what to do...

I seem to have broken my ICS

I'm not sure exactly what's gone wrong, but here's the story, so maybe someone can help out. I had a PC running WinXP with 2 network cards. One was hooked up to my cable modem, the other was connected to a switch into which another machine was connected. The cable modem was connected to a 3COM PCI card, and the LAN was run from the onboard NIC. The cable modem NIC was set to DHCP, and the LAN NIC was as follows: IP: 192.168.0.1 SN: 255.255.255.0 GW: <blank> DNS: <blank> The client machines was configured as follows: IP: 192.168.0.2 SN: 255.255.255.0 GW: 192.168.0.1 DNS: 192.168.0.1 This all worked perfectly. Over the past few days, I dismanted that PC and rebuilt it (new mobo, RAM, hard disk and so-on). I reinstalled XP, installed all the patches and got the Internet up and working. I then came to look at the LAN, and I cannot get it working for the life of me. The new motherboard in the 'server' machine has an onboard Realtek NIC, and it seems to be working OK. I have configured as above. The client machine hasn't changed in anyway, but I can't get the PCs to talk to each other properly. Pinging is very intermittent, and ICS just doesn't work at all. I don't think I've missed anything obvious, but if I have, I'd love to know what it is. In the meantime, I'm going back to pulling my hair out. Please save me before I'm completely bald....

    Multiple svchost.exe active

It's perfectly normal. Do a search for svchost on here and/or on the MS Knowledge base.

    Best FPS/Action Gaming Moments

Heh, starting to turn into a RotT revival around here now! For the time, it was a great game. Drunken Missiles were a laugh as well. No idea where they were going to go. Just a fire and hope weapon. Lost many, many hours playing it over a LAN.

    Best FPS/Action Gaming Moments

One of my best would have to be a multilpayer game of Rise of the Triads. It had a number of taunts bound to the function keys that played sound files when you pressed them. I sneaked up behind a mate, hit the "Behind you" taunt and then unloaded my dual pistols into him. Was a great moment ashis speakers were turned up quite loud and it gave him the shock of his life!

    Question about selling Office XP

You can't sell it and continue to use it. When you sell it, you are transferring the license to the new owner. You no longer have a license to legally run the software on your PC.
  15. Quote: What OS is the application running under? If Windows 9x/ME, you may try adding the DOS variables: SET TEMP=A:\ SET TMP=A:\ But I don't suspect that will work. I covered that in my reply. The problem is that ALL temp files will get sent to this location, inclusing all the Windows related stuff and anything else that creates a temp file (AV software up[censored] and so-on). A floppy disk just won't cut it for such a sweeping setting. As I said, it might be workable if you set those variables just before you start running the app, and change them back to their original settings when you've finished.
