  1. I doubt there's a return policy on the pirate ship.

    XP p2p network permissions

I think it would be easier to create a restricted group, and make this member its only user. Give the group access to the desired folder...and you've also made it easier to assign/remove future access for this limited group to folders, files, etc. Simply another way of accomplishing the task, neither better or worse than the previous Just...different. My preference is to manage groups as opposed to users. However, ask 10 net admins the same question...you'll probably get 15 different opinions Happy Computing!

  4. PROBLEM SOLVED! Gentlemen...I solved this issue last night. After a few hours of testing on two different machines, I have perfect results from my "fix". Here's how I fixed it. Keep in mind, this is on an AMD machine. I'm not sure how this affects Intel machines, or even if certain Intel machines have this issue to begin with as a result of MCA support. 1) Open Regedit 2) Browse to this key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\EnableMCA 3) Change the DWord value from a 1 (default) to a 0 (zero). 4) Reboot 5) Fixed After doing this, I no longer have application popup 26 - Machine Check Regs on my AMD rigs (2 used for experimentation). Good luck and if you're the paranoid type - back up your registry before changing this value. I happened to stumble across this key while entering my own custom registry tweaks on a newly installed OS for about the 20th time during the past two weeks Happy Computing!
  5. Well, not to disagree with you...but... The motherboard in my system (ASUS A7N8X Deluxe) uses the nForce chipset. Also, if I'm not mistaken - I've seen Intel users post similar problems in newsgroup threads about this topic. Hmm, I think in Google Groups somewhere, although I can't really remember specifics. However, among people experiencing this issue - the vast majority do seem to be AMD users. Thanks
  6. Hey guys...great site here. I joined just to participate in this thread Anyway, as you might have imagined, I have this same exact sequence of events happening (event logs filling up with Machine Check Reg Application popups at cold boots). I have searched far and wide for possible solutions. I've tried almost everything (reasonable) I can imagine. I've even done some illogical things in hopes of stumbling into a fix. Needless to say, nothing has had any impact in getting these popups to stop appearing in my logs. Yeah, yeah...I know they're "information" and not errors, but since when does Windows ever show us something "just because"? The system having the issues : Motherboard - ASUS A7N8X Deluxe (we all know this board) Graphics - NVIDIA FX 5600 (256) CPU - AMD Athlon XP 2100 (not overclocked) Operating System(s) - Windows XP Pro, XP Home have both been tried (legitimately licensed full versions of each) What I've done trying to solve this problem : Reformatted, clean installed both operating systems - including a low level format of my Western Digital HDD in one instance Swapped power supplies (replaced Antec 350W with TTGI 450W) - the TTGI power supply was brand new. Verified power supply to be clean, adequate, and cool running. Regression tested my system hardware, removing one component at a time until I was down to the minimal configuration (1 hard drive, 1 graphics card, chipset drivers) I even removed the floppy controller, onboard audio, onboard NIC, add-on soundcard, CDRW, DVDRW, etc. I have reformatted about 10 times in the past 2 weeks playing with this problem. With regard to my operating system, I went back to pre-SP Windows XP Pro & Home. I tried XP Pro and Home SP1, and finally XP Pro and Home SP2 with all updates. I think I have literally tried every possible configuration with the operating systems and hardware I have laying around my "frankenstein lab" of PC parts. I'm posting this not so much that someone will offer a resolution, but rather that this information will be added to the problem as we all Google away at a solution. BTW - I'm using the latest unified drivers from NVIDIA. I've even pulled drivers out of other (more recent) unified driver packages that work with my hardware (audio drivers, IDE drivers). Any thoughts? Thanks!
