How to log into Mandrake as ROOT ?

Thank you very much. I used the chmod function but it doesn't appear to like it when I try to change the attributes of folders on a NTFS (windows) partition. Is it possible for linux to modify a file on a NTFS partition ?
  2. Hi, I'm a beginner with Linux and I would like to change the permissions of some folders (on another partition) to make them writable (change to 777). The only way to do it is to log as ROOT if I understand correctly. But, sorry if it does seem silly for you, I don't know how to log as root. Could anyone help ?
  3. I had a 120GB hard drive with Windows XP and I decided to install Mandrake 10.0. I created a new partition with PartitionMagic 8.0 Then I installed Mandrake and it worked fine. I'm a real beginner with Linux and I have an annoying problem. When I tried to boot Window and I was unable to load it. I got a blue screen and a message saying "autochk not found - Skipping autocheck" and that it rebooted. From Linux I can see everything on my Windows partition and even use the files so the partition seems to be OK. I'm using lilo as a boot loader. this is the different partitions I have : Mount point: swap Device: hda4 type: Linux Swap (0x82) Start: sector 63 Size: 50MB Formatted mounted ------------------------------ Mount point: /mnt/win_c Device: hda1 DOS drive letter: C (just a guess) type: FAT32 (0xb) Start: sector 1028223 Size: 5,9GB Formatted mounted ------------------------------ Mount point: /mnt/win_d Device: hda2 DOS drive letter: D (just a guess) type: NTFS (or HPFS) (0x7) Start: sector 13510665 Size: 98GB Formatted mounted ------------------------------- Mount point: / Device: hda3 type: Linux native (0x83) Start: sector 219737070 Size: 9.7GB Formatted mounted Partition booted by default (for MS-DOS boot, not for lilo) ------------------------------- Can anyone help ?
