I have noticed many-a-problem with people playing DOS games in windows XP, especially MOO. At the time i am writting this, i am just about to start a new thread - guide to running DOS on Windows XP. What the hell are you doing with an ISA interface on an XP machine? I'm an old-school man myself so i can understand an old SB16 PCI, its one of my favorite, but a 2.0!?!?!? Theres no point!

There is always a risk of resizing partitions - especially FAT and NTFS - Linux seems to handle it ok. I once changed my harddisk to dynamic, i found through a benchmark that the average transfer rate of the harddrive was reduced, and it gt slower, and slower, and s.l.o.w.e.r....... and finally crashed. I've never trusted it ever since.

balvarez, those buzzes and beeps sound like a warning from your bios. The only thing i cant think of is a temperature / fan problem if you have the monitoring enabled.

Hah! This is the true story i have learnt. I wish i had more money, if you had the money, this IS the way to go. I'm not sure what the technology is like elsewhere but i heear that here in Australia we get things among the first in the world. I couldnt be bothered going on about it, but if you want a HIGH END SUPER COMPUTER you could go for a P4 (whatever is best, im not too big on Intel) as long as it supports Quad-Pumping and duel channel DDR ram, or duel-channel RAMBUS if you can find it. Personally, i'd rather go an AMD Barton-core system with a double-pumped bus system, duel channel DDR - that means the sacred nForce2 Ultra chipset (northbridge AND southbridge). For video, i'd go GeForce simply because of the overall power of the integrated nVidia system. Mind my language but f*** radeons, you will have a lot of trouble with them in the future - they may be a fraction faster than GeForce, but what's the use for an extra few hundred dollars? Go GeForce FX 5900 - the 5900XT TD goes for $300, and with 16 textures per pixel and a hardware mpeg decoder, who could go wrong?

If you play several games of that era, invest in a 3DFX card. I love my Voodoo2's in SLI 3DFX was the most advanced hardware manufacturer, way ahead of it's time. Afterall, they did invent the best thing to ever hit the gaming industry, Glide? OpenGL meaning Open-source GLide? ANYWAY, with my Voodoo 2's in SLI (two voodoo 2's working together), overclocked with extra fans (three on each!), i can run Quake 3 at 1024x768 at 60fps! Not that i'd want to though...... It's good for games like NFSIISE (thats the 3dfx version), Quake, Quake II, Turok, and other games of that time. Many of them had native 3DFX support.

Warcraft III! Frozen Throne expansion! Warcraft IV a.k.a World Of Warcraft (when it comes out), waiting, waiting, always waiting.................

Thats definately a sound problem. DEFINATELY not a video problem - GeForces a MADE for games based on the Q3 engine! First thing i would do is turn down sound hardware acceleration (control panel > multimedia settings). That sometimes fixes the ploblem. Other than that, check drivers, disable any fiddly-crap that is "part of the drivers". That includes any memory-resident programs (ie, system tray). If disabling that causes your computer to have no sound, get a new soundcard - that means it is not fully DX compatible and requires that program (called a porter, or more widely known as a wrapper in the gaming industry). I don't undertand people and their soundcards. There is no such thing as a fast soundcard - unless you want hardware decoding or digital procesing, all you need is a standard little sound device - even 4 channel soundcards are nothing fancy. Good old AC97's, C-Media (CMI) and Yamaha are prolly the best for general use. These days DX does all the work, you just need something to plug ur speakers into. On-board sound usually works best - if you can get it to work. Either that, a cheap $10 'speaker card' like one mentioned above, but if you want to pay good money for one, get a sound blaster live/audigy.

Red Alert - Yes Diablo - Some machines (get the latest patch) Rainbow 6 - Yes Quake 3 - Yes Command and Conquer - Tiberian Dawn (the original)? You will need the XP fix (check out the patches section at Megagames Silent Thunder - Dont know Commandos 2 - Commandos one does Longbow 2 - Told that it does 688(i) Hunter/Killer - Dunno Check some reviews on the net for them, also some of those sites that are dedicated to classic gaming.

Check on the internet if there is any fix for it, or look at the system requiremants an a few game review sites. Many of them test it on a variety of systems. Check the official website too.

Microsoft does not provide any support for Windows 95 anymore. I have never heard of anybody trying to network XP and 95 before though, try setting up IPX prtotcol to use instead of TCP. That said, the DirectPlay drivers might not be compatible but i doubt that. Make sure you have the critical update for Windows 95 networking - every 95 machine needs it to network with 98 or later. I think it's called "Winsock update" or maybe Winsock2. Hope i have helped.

Ive always experienced problems with games ported from PSX to PC, especially on WinXP. Ive never played Resident Evil on PC, and i dont really intend to so i cant really help you there. The only thing i could suggest is going to the website to see if they have a patch, or search on the internet for a fix, patch, or a guide. Try googling for "Resident Evil Windows XP". Hope i helped in any way.

What a strange problem. Make sure all the computers are running the exact same revision of OS (eg, all XP sp1) and that the File Sharing Service is enabled (i know that XP home is usually disabled by default). It really sounds like a firewall/rights problem to me though. Check IP's, workgroups/domains and any other crap like that. I find that if i fiddle around a bit, things usually work out.
