problem visualizing ie temp folder contents

IE's folder is set with the System attribute on, which makes it invisible to Windows and dos. Try navigating there directly by making a shortcut with the target: C:\WINNT\explorer.exe /e,C:\Documents and Settings\MyProfile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\content.ie5 (Or type it in a windows explorer view)

    Which Windows Registry Key...

I never see any new values in there before I reboot after installing. It's become a mere curiosity now. I wanted to replace explorer.exe with mine, but I remembered I can use the recovery console to get NTFS DOS, and just copy it.

    Which Windows Registry Key...

Yep, but assuming one file from one application, is there a predetermined root folder, like \winnt\setup, or just dump it in \temp, and the registry key's data holds the path? But this is all contingent on learning that key.
  4. ...is used at startup to replace in-use dll's and misc. files? When I install an application, and it says setup will need to restart to overwrite system files that are in use, to what key does it write this information? Possibly answered when I see the data in the key, but what folder do the newer files get placed prior to rebooting? Thanks!

Changed Win2k Server name and now can't file share

ahh ok, so 98 HAS to logon with an account that is on the server, even if not logging onto the domain. So...she must have been using the 2k account after all.

    Win98se Service packs?

"Windows 98 Customer Service Pack available now on CD The Windows 98 Customer Service Pack includes bug fixes for Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 4.0 as well as Year 2000 updates but does not include any new features. If you are running Windows 98 Second Edition you do not need the Customer Service Pack. Click here to order." http://microsoft.upgrade.com/ doens't seem to exist anymore

Changed Win2k Server name and now can't file share

Wiped users and recreated, she can get back in. Odd, I don't recall her even using the proper account name. Why did share SID 'corrupt' when I'm not even on AD/NTFS? Plain old Sharing relies on local user accounts? I can understand in my environment, with AD/NTFS having to recreate login's...but oh well! It's working again.

    Win98se Service packs?

No one knows if the hotfixes are online somwhere? Or where they are? Some google searches netting me way too much Windows update and not much of anything else. Are some/all/any 98 fixes embedded in IE SP's? If I could d/l ie5.5 SP and get fixes like mapped drive shutdown, that would be perfect. Burn that to my 98 cd and that would solve that!

Changed Win2k Server name and now can't file share

You mean kill the user account? That's the only authentication that could be used. There is not a machine account (unless one is created for me when I initially connected when I loaded the server, but I don't think that's the case?)
  10. I needed to change the machine name, so I disconnected all the mapped drives from the clients, jumped on the server, changed the name, then rebooted. Then I tried to browse the server's shares from the clients. (98se) through Net 'hood. When I attempt to open the server's icon, it want's a password for IPC$. I never set one, nor saw this dialog previously. I tried to manually map a drive to a share that was already available and it came up with a password too, which I never set. No shares on the server have passwords. All shares have 'Everyone' with Full Control. So I removed all the shares on the server, then recreated them, thinking that like user accounts, each one is unique and I threw it off by changing the server name. Tried to browse shares...still asks for an IPC$ password, or an password for the resource as I attempt to Map Drive. I unchecked File Sharing in the Network settings, rebooted, then rechecked it, and added a few shares...and still the shares are asking me for a password I didn't set. So next I uninstalled File sharing, rebooted, then reinstalled it, added a share, and I still can't browse shares nor map a drive. This server is a standalone, not part of a domain, not Active directory..not even NTFS. Logon name for my client has an account on the server, partially coincidence...the other client doesn't use the account I made for her. I just reloaded her machine with win98se (She had WinME ::barf: The server is able to browse shares of the 98 machine, copy files, etc just fine. The server's IIS process works, I can pcAnywhere to it as well. Anyone?

    Stable Voodoo3 3000 Win2k Drivers?

Anyone have this combo that found stable drivers? Specificially for Descent 3's 3dfxGlide. Or even XP? The drivers that came with 2k, Descent3 doesn't even register Glide. I have a LAN today, and I just wiped my 2k and XP clients and reverted back to 98se. Next time, however, I'd like to leave my clients alone

    Win98se Service packs?

Since 98 is being phased out, I imagine Windows Update will no longer be available for 98 users. I will always need a 98 machine on my network. For client support, application testing, and games. Is there anywhere I can d/l an install of the Windows Update security fixes and stuff? I'd like to reburn a 98 CD with the patches as well as Dx8, etc.. Thanks
