Try some of the different skins, some of these have ultra-compact views.

stick with version 6.4
at least it let you save files and run multiple instances

Did you try the Miniplayer skin? It is a skin that comes with the stupid thing, and is very small.
[edit]
Of course, you could always just use the old media player when you want a compact mode.
X:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe

there 's a semi-compact mode in MediaPlayer7 but it sucks big time. and I mean it.
you can use the skin "classic" that's the closest you'll get to "compact mode" and it runs when you are viewing videos.
but don't get fooled by mediaplayer7 or only if you don't need to:
-save the files you just viewed
-have a real compact mode.
-run multiple instances.
-be able to configure the decoders. (you cannot adjust DivX :)properties for example)
- some stuff I forgot...
but if you like the "eye candy"...the crapy media library... the vis...and the ugly skins...
you choose.
