Help
RJ-45 refers to a type of adapter/cable/jack in LAN terminology.
My professor told us that this is strange because true RJ-45 does not apply to any form of LAN wiring or architecture.
He then offered somebody in the class the opportunity to write a paper on the "low down of RJ-45" "what REALLY is it?".
Well, I was the person who volunteered the paper. Can anybody help me get my feet wet here? I have no idea where to look... or even where to start... since RJ-45 is widely accepted as LAN terminology.

In the most simple terms, RJ45 refers to the connector/jack combination on the ends of a CAT5 UTP Cable.
The "plug" is the RJ45 male and the one on your NIC is the RJ45 female.
The fact that CAT5 UTP is often referred to as RJ45 is mainly because people get the two confused.
This is similar to the way people call coax BNC when it is actually 50ohm Coax with BNC connectors.

It's not much to add, but all of the phones [technically, they are $800 voice/data terminals, go figure ;)] on my campus [USC in LA] connect with RJ-45, so it's not just for LANs, but also internal PBXs.

RJ-45 is a jack type. This jack is used with the standard CAT-5 UTP and some digital phone systems. I believe that some phone systems in Europe use the same jack. Most phones in the US use RJ-11 jacks.

The phones in the UK are RJ-11 as well.
Our entire office building is filled with RJ-45 based wall ports.
We can then just patch in a port to connect a PC.
If we want to plug a phone into a port, we need to use an RJ-11 to RJ-45 convertor box.
