Half-Life 1 Change Game Problem

Can you help ive been having this uhhh...stupid problem lately.
Whenever I download a mod for Half life 1 I go to half life go to change game click on the mod but then it opens and only stays for a few seconds and exits.
AND THAT KIND OF STUFF HAPPENS ON EVERY MOD!!!
PLEASE HELP
