Now here's something bizarre: can you say "No Start Programs" Well, my 98 using friend sure can. This is a clean install, but he doesnt want to install AGAIN. Plus, hes hooked on System Shock 2 and doesnt want to have to fight his way back to his place right now. Under programs, there is ONE item. Thats it. From what he tells me the other menu items-settings, documents, etc. are Okay. He reformatted/reinstalled after a buncha Radeon tweaks screwed stuff up. He is using no tweaks right now.
Here's his specs:
Duron 800
FIC AZ11
at least 128MB ram
Radeon 32 DDR AGP
Western Digital 20 GB ATA100 7200 RPM
Affrey 10x DVD
98SE.
This is really weird. Havent heard of this stuff before...have you?
I'll try to get some more info...

Could be a virus. Have you checked the recycle bin to see if the shortcuts were simply deleted? Could they have just been set to hidden?

Good ideas, but this happened without those.
It was like after the second reboot after a full install of Windows, where windows was done installing completely and setting up everything. Like when you got to use windows for the first time.
Unless....would a dirty DVD-ROM drive screw up an install that bad.
I'll see if these things work right.
No virus scanner yet. Its just the drivers, but theyve worked fine before, and like System Shock 2.

I ment that having an updated virusscanner would bee a good thing
Install it, update and do a full system scan just to make sure your system is clean.

Oh, okay. I'll tell my friend to try that. The mobo came with a full version of Norton AV.
