Configuring sound

Hi
Have installed Mandrake 9.1
No icons on desktop so have added them.
No sound for playing using CD Player on desktop.
No KPP for internet dialup.
Mandrake version 9 no problem to install and have all icons available and working. All ways use Root on installation.
Looks like I will have to reinstall and not use root
