Descent Freespace: The Great War

Hello,
I've recently tried to play Descent Freespace: The Great War, again on my Laptop running Windows Vista. Yes, I know its designed for Windows '95 and ME. So I use the program compatibility. The game looks and runs great until some Japanese-looking code appears at the top of the screen with every key push. It then proceeds to pause the game. I'm not sure the cause, anyone know how to prevent this from happening? Its hard to play without pushing any keys
