Canon N1220 Scanner USB won't work

I have a abit kt7/raid
256megs pc-133
creative geforce2 gts
servicepack 1 and via driver update
scanner won't run it starts to calibrate but stops and then scanner shuts down. Canon said there could be a power problem. is the any software to check usb ports. had a HP scanjet 5300. it would scan a couple times then stop responding too. I think it is something with my usb ports. scanner works fine on my Win ME box. help me please.
