I upgraded my wife's Dell this weekend with a new processor. I took out the older processor (P3 550 slot 1 100FSB coppermine), bought some parts and proceeded to put a new system together for our daughter, figuring I could save money on a new cpu by using the perfectly good Dell one.

Everything went fine, the system posted and recognized the processor (the mb is a brand new Asus P3B-F). The only problem is that because of the passive crappy aluminum heat sink Dell uses, the cpu over heats in the new system. I have installed an intake fan at the bottom of the case and an exhaust fan at the top of the case providing excellent air-flow, but its not the same as the shroud system Dell uses.

Within 5 minutes, the onboard cpu monitor on the Asus reads the cpu temperature is at 170 degrees F. I haven't changed any VCore settings and the board is set to deliver 3.3V to the system bus, (basically the default settings).

This indicates to me that my problem here is I have to get that blinking POS heatsink off and I have no idea how. I checked a number of overclocking sites, Dell message boards and even called Dell tech support with no results other than (uh....I don't think you can).

Basically, somebody please help!!! I don't want to buy a new processor if I can help it.

Hmm, not sure if this is what were you were looking for, but you can try getting a new fan setup from somewhere like http://www.millisec.com

I have a few of the GlobalWin fans from there and they are _awesome_ compared to the crappy fans that come with the boxed Intel set. Also, they were really fast on the shipping and price was right.

I took that stupid dell heatsink off of my p3 with a couple of case screws. I used the screws to push the plastic pins out and it just poped right off!
Go here for a complete guide! http://www.3dfxcool.com/install/p3.htm
------------------
My System
Dell Demension XPS T500
Triple Boot Windows 2000 Pro 2195 (allways reliable) / Windows Whistler Pro 2250 (cool but buggy) / Windows Millennium Final (waste of disk space)
PIII @ 500 Mhz (with after market heatsink and dual fan)
128 Megs Ram
TNT2 Ultra Graphics Card (with the core and memory overclocked by 20 Mhz and dual voodoo coolers)
3Com 10/100 Ethernet Card
3Com 56k Modem
12.6 Gig IBM HD
40X CD Rom Drive
100 Mb Zip Drive

You can leave the heatsink on the CPU if u don't wanna wreck it. Just get a good fan, even the case fan will work, and strap it to the heatsink. You can use anythig to do that, strings, glue, zap-straps. Anything will do as long as the fan is close to the CPU.
Remember that ya CPU was working in Dell system.. so the heatsink is good enough.. just strap a fan on it.

Thanks for the help guys. I got a twin fan heatsink on the thing now.

Hopefully that high temp surge didn't fubar the cpu.
