Euro symbol and Outlook Express 6

It was always my understanding (perhaps wrongly so) that the Euro symbol is typeable in Outlook Express by using the right-hand Alt key together with the 4 key. Currently, I have OE6 SP1 and, yes, the text window certainly produces the Euro symbol when those two keyboard keys are used. But the recipient gets instead a collection of random symbols. I've tested this out by sending messages to myself.

 

Whilst the message is still in the Outbox, OE puts up a dialog box where it asks you if you want to send the message in Unicode or whether you just want to send it 'as is'. The message states that it cannot guarantee that the recipient will actually get a Euro symbol. I've tried both of those options but without success.

 

Can someone tell me how to generate a bona fide Euro symbol in OE, therefore, that will still be a Euro symbol at the recipient's? I can't understand why it doesn't work on my machine, especially as I can recall especially requiring the Euro symbol in the Setup of WinXP, when first installing it.

The Euro symbol is usual Alt and the "e" key. The symbol on the 4 key look only similar to the Euro symbol.

Eh? The additional symbol on the 4 key is most definitely the Euro symbol. Alt + e simply invokes the Edit function in the menu bar.

 

Any Alt + 4 seems to produce the Euro symbol correctly on the screen but Outlook Express simply doesn't send it as that symbol; it sends it either as a question-mark or as a pair of non-text symbols.

I see . The Euro symbol is on UK keyboards on Alt + 4.

Sounds like you are using the wrong character set/encoding. You can change the encoding under Format => Encoding while writing a new email.

I've already got the Format set to "Western European ISO". Of the limited choice available, surely that would be the most appropriate, especially as I recently e-mailed a Mac user with the Euro symbol included?

 

I'll try changing it to "Western European (Windows)".

Thanks for that suggestion about Format/Encoding, as changing to "Western European (Windows)" makes it work.

 

I'd point out that I also went into Tools/Options of OE and made sure that the encoding for fonts, in a couple of the tabs there, were also set to "Western European (Windows)", and made it the default.

 

I'll now need to check that my Mac contact and my other contacts in Canada and the USA receive the symbol correctly.

 

BTW, it's actually Righthand Alt + 4. Lefthand Alt + 4 does not give the Euro symbol onscreen at all.

So,I know a lot of interesting utilities. But some days ago I was in the Internet and saw there - repairing outlook express files. It was interesting for me and I used it. I was very glad,because of the utility resolved my old issues with OE emails for a minute. And as far as I remember,the application performed it without payment.
