I have tried to fix this problem and caused more stress than I thought was possible. My system restore has a blank screen when I press system restore. I have tried to put in dll.'s and that kind of stuff and the computer says that it is missing a module.
Also, as if the system restore wasnt a big enough of a problem my search does not work. The computer says that it cannot find the search companion and I may need to run setup. I dont know what setup its talking about.
The disk defragmenter when started says "Cannot open C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfrg.msc.
This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC consule, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file."
How can I fix these problems? Im desperate for some kind of help.

Some possible solutions:
1. Run SFC /SCANNOW to restore any missing system files.
2. Try http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=301224
3. A fix is here: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/SysRestoreCalendar.zip

5. Permissions missing in Software section in Registry (not sure where).
