company of heroes directx trouble

I just installed company of heroes, and it needs directx 9.0c to run. so I updated the directx and when I play the game only the interface buttons are visible. the battle field / actual game visuals aren't visible. Instead it's all black. I don't get any directx errors, and the game still runs fine. I can click on everything and hear what's happening, but I just can't see it.

running XP, with directx 9.0c (the dec 16th release)
I've checked and have all the system requirements for the game.

I've also noticed that several more basic games are misaligned on the screen since I've updated directx. I'm not sure why.

any suggestions?

Is that game a fake by any chance? coz that happened to me with a fake game once.
