Cant get past logon screen! (users dont even display)

I just restarted my computer and when the user menu logon screen displays the windows log, it stops. I can still move the mouse and there appears to be some hard drive activity, but it will not display the list of users and let me log in! Same probiblem in safe mode. How can I disable the screen and either just have the auto login (only one user) from where I am?

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?

everything blew up....
I think the drive is messed up. I did a repair install of xp and the drive would not boot into windows. Now after a full reinstall of xp the computer restarts at the loading screen.
