Using NT 4.0 servers in a SBS server 2003 domain

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I really hope someone can help me with this query.

We're currently running 2 NT 4.0 servers in an NT domain.

We're planning on getting a new server running SBS server 2003.

Is it possible to get all the servers running in the same domain, without moving data off of the NT servers?

Thanks

Are you moving to a 2003 domain or keeping the existing NT4 domain?

For NT4 it is not possible to convert a PDC or BDC to a member server. You have to reinstall windows.

---This is not 100% true. You can use third party products such as UPromote (http://utools.com/UPromote.asp) to make the conversion.

Thanks,

Well, according to Microsoft it isn't but obviously I forgot about 3rd party products...

I viewed this thread originally because I have a similar situation to gman. I believe that one option, if you choose to keep an NT 4 domain and a SBS 2003 AD implementation seperate, is to use XP stored passwords (rundll32.exe keymgr.dll,KRShowKeyMgr) to setup account names and passwords for multiple domains. In my case, the NT 4 domain will be temporary, nonetheless, I need to make it easy for users in the interim.
