Fedora Core 4 and nVidia drivers simply not working together.

Recommended Posts

Can you be a little more specific? At what point is it failing?

1. During the installation of the NVIDIA package?

2. No usable screen after installing the drivers and editing your xorg.conf file...?

3. is this a 32 bit or 64 bit system?

4. What exact make and model card is this...or what system is it running on...Compaq, HP, self built...?

Ok, I set the runlevel to 3 and log-in as root, I start the .mun file, I get the accept screen, I accept, then it asks to connect to FTP which it does then it asks to attempt to build a driver for this version of linux in which it fails. It is a PNY Geforce 6600GT running on my own custom built machine (32-bit).

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Dustin

Ok, after doing some reading around, it seems I need to download the kernel source also, Im downloading the RPM currently for kernel (2.6.14-1.1653_FC4) and will update when I complete this and attempt to install the GFX drivers.

Ok, I installed the Kernel-source then rebooted into init level 3, installed the drivers and it works nicely

Step by step

1. Download official nVidia drivers

2. Download matching kernel-source to your Kernel version

3. as root, edit init level in /etc/inittab to 3 from 5

4. Reboot

5. login as root and run nVidia.mun file

6. after completion, type init 5 to go back to a GUI

7. Change /etc/inittab back to original value

8. Tada

That's the ticket! Nice going.

BTW, I did get the drivers going on my FC4 install this afternoon. The directions are a little off.

Downloading the kernel source was the ticket for your problem.
