Might & Magic IX not loading

Hello there!

I decided I wanted to play M & M IX again so reinstalled it. However whenever I try and open the game I get a small "loading" box, which then closes and opens another smaller box which is crashed and I have to clt al del to close it.

I'm on windows XP
I have tried downloading the patches (1.2,1.3 & 1.3a)
I've tried changing the compatibility to windows 98.

Now I played this game earlier this year on this computer and while I think I had the same problem for the life of me I can't remember how I fixed it!

If anyone could assist I would very grateful
