I am trying to run 7th Guest on my Dell with Windows XP. I installed the game and all of the patches. Whenever I open the Trilobyte player (v32tng) I get a few moments of music with a black screen and then a message saying: "unknown asset type -- please restart". When I have Disk 2 in the drive I get the appropriate spooky music and bony hand icon asking me to put Disk 1 into the drive so the player seems to be working sometimes. Thank you for your help.

Have you tried running it in windows '98 mode yet? If not, right click the shortcut, then click Properties/Compatibility, then set it to run in '98 mode. Works for a lot of games, give it a whirl. smile

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have tried running it in Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows 95 compatibility modes. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Is this originally a DOS based game?

Okay, if it's a DOS game, I suggest you trying running it in DOS, which you can do by scooping DOSBox, get it here: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1

It works, I've used it myself to run a few old games. The prob I had was that after I got them up and running, I was so disappointed by the graphics(which looked good back then), that I couldn't handle playing them, they were sad man, really sad, heh heh heh laugh

I've got DOSBox up and running, but I can't get 7th Guest to recognize my sound card. Tho I use the built-in sound card that came with my motherboard, DOSBox is supposed to emulate SB 16. But 7th Guest tells me that my sound drivers aren't loaded. I've got the IRQ/DMA settings right for the install (they match my DOSBox config), but they still won't load! And I can't play the game w/o them. Any suggestions?

Try to change card settings in game. smile I definitely was able to start 7th Guest n DOSBox, and it was recently. But not so recently, that I could remember, how to set sound in this game. frown As I can assume, it something about "select card, select IRQ, test settings, save settings". Maybe you simply forget to save settings? If not, try SB or SB Pro, not SB16.

"7th Guest" should run in Windows, when using the downloaded file "v32tng.exe" to run the game.
http://www.tbyte.com/downloads/t7gwinnv.zip
Run the installer (7th Guest-disc 2) from a DOS window (Start_Run_Cmd), which copies the files to the c:\Id\t7g folder. Then copy the downloaded file's content (extracted from the .zip file) to the c:\Id\t7g directory. Double-click "C:\ID\T7G\v32tng.exe" to run the game. Alt-Enter toggles between Full Screen & window.
There's no DOS drivers for my SB Audigy sound card, so running in Windows is the only option.
Runs fine for a while; I can solve one or two of the "puzzles", then the game crashes and abruptly quits.
Force saving: move the cursor to the top of the screen, where it should turn into a sphinx pointer (pyramid with eyeball). Click this to get a prompt for game options, one of which should be "save". You get to pick an empty slot of 10 available to save.

I have tried all of these and I still continue to get errors. I tried installing the game with DOSbox. When I tried to run it, I got the error about my sound card. I looked online and found the DirectX "patch". I have configured this to work, but I still get the "unknown asset type -- please restart" error message sometimes while playing the gmae. It closes the game, and I have to start from the last save. I have tried each compatability setting with the same result. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate your help.

>is its very unstable and i keep crashing.
>So far havn't been able to save it, moving the cursor to the top produces a triangle with a dot (maybe a pyramid with an eye!?), but clicking causes an error and a crash!
> Cant skip the opening sequences,
