unable to defrag in winxp and mup.sys problem

hello there


I have trying to run defrag option on my compact laptop
i get the defrag screen but the defragmentation does not start
also i read somewhere in one of the forums to see wether
it works in safemode.Unfortenately the hangs when trying to
boot up from safe mode at mup.sys,I tried doing a system
restore still the computer hangs at mup.sys,Also tried
doing a system repair from winxp cd.Still the same problem
I cant afford to format the system as there are a not
of programs installed and data which will take me at
least a day to restore.Can someone please help me
with this?????

I don't understand wether your problem is not being able to defrag your hard drive or not being able to boot in safe mode...

If you want to defragment your hard drive, you might want to try running a defrag while your power cord is connected. (it might not work while running on battery power)

If your computer will not boot at all, I strongly recommend contacting a local business specialised in servicing laptops to back up your important data before REINSTALLING windows.

For the defragmentation, i would just change the program. Download "Diskeeper" and either buy it or find a key online. I think it's a pretty good program, but it does replace the default windows defrag program. If you're desperate to defrag, i would suggest that.
