PCI Multimedia Audio Device Driver..

The yellow horn that loads on the taskbar disappeared, and I'm not too sure why. Now it's original dll files are getting errors, and sound doesn't work for me anymore. I tried up[censored] them, but they ask for a Windows 98 Second Edition CD, which I don't have and doubt I have ever had in the past.

 

Here is a pic of the devices that aren't working currently..

 

the audio device I'am (or was) using is PCI Multimedia, know where I can find the driver for the PCI Multimedia Audio Device? I have a IBM Thinkpad Series 770z, it's running on Windows 98 Second Edition.

 

if there is a driver I can download, where on my computer should I download it at so it can work?

 

help be greatly appreciated...

Do you have any CDs which camed with this computer? I recall that my old IBM desktop PC had two CDs; recovery cd and drivers & utilities cd.

The "PCI Multimedia Audio Device" is not name of the device. It is just 'default' name for unknown audio device.

nope, laptop came with no cd's, I won it off auction on ebay..so all I got was the recepit for the laptop and of course the laptop its self..

sound isn't back yet, however I downloaded an audio pack from the website and it helped find the things for the 'Unknown Device', but it's looking for a file called 'cwcprops.cpl' I did a computer search on my harddrive but the file is no where to be found, any place where I can get this file?

When you install the audio package ("Audio driver for Windows 95/98 - ThinkPad 600E, 770X/Z") it will install files to: "C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO". Use the supplied setup.exe to install the drivers.

Or use the Windows' driver page to locate the 'cwcprops.cpl' file from "C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO". The file is packed to "cwcprops.cp_" named file.

Download program called EVEREST Home Edition, http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1〈=en&pageid=1

Install and start it. Then on the main window, select "Multimedia" from the left panel, then "PCI /PnP Audio". You should see your soundcard(s). Now you know what sound card(s) you got.

I've had the same problem for 6 months and didn't know what soundcard I had. I've downloaded Everest and *kazam* there it was, then downloaded the drivers and *POOF*. IT WORKS!

I have my sound back!

WindowsUpdate never detected these devices? Not suprising really I've always wondered why MS has never had better hardware detection and driver support @ WindowsUpdate. It would be awesome if ALL hardware developers since MS their latest stable WHQL drivers even BETA drivers, and notified WindowsUpdate. As it is now only some companies go through the length WHQL process when the hardware is first released, get the drivers posted on WindowsUpdate and MABYE WindowsUpdate detects the hardware or not.

Deepak, you need to use the Everest program listed earlier in the post...

 

PCI Multimedia Device is a strictly generic name that Windows (of any kind) gives to something that it can identify as a "Multimedia" device (which all soundcards are). But it is GENERIC...any card installed in your computer would show up as this before you install drivers...

 

We need to know what card it is before we can direct you to drivers...

The following may be of some benefit. In the case of a non-functional/non-existent Device this procedure will remove same from System in most cases including the PCI Multimedia Device Category.

 

CONTROL PANEL SYSTEM DEVICE DELETION

 

Many people have disabled a device in their device manager to avoid conflicts with other devices. The device is usually known to cause conflicts with various onboard devices and other add in cards, or a driver for same simply cannot be found since the device is non-operational so we all disable it. Well, let's get that device out of the tree so we can concentrate on other things.

 

1) go to the system tab in control panel and there choose hardware profiles.

There, choose copy, and name the profile something like "TEST" or "Profile

2".

 

2) Disable the particular device in the device manager. Reboot your machine,

choose your new hardware profile "TEST" or "Profile 2" when prompted. It is

an exact copy of the original so everything will run fine. Disable that same device here also. Then uncheck the box that says "Exists in all

hardware profiles".

 

3) Reboot and choose original configuration for hardware profiles and make

sure the settings of "disabled" etc are the same.

 

4) Reboot and choose your new hardware profile "TEST" or "profile 2" and

here Delete the device. A box will appear asking "remove from which

hardware profile" and you should choose "original configuration".

 

5) Reboot and choose "original configuration" and verify the device is gone.

If so, go to the hardware profile Tab and delete your second hardware

profile.

 

6) Now the device does not appear anywhere in your tree. It is not

using any resources, has no conflicts, and cannot be seen.

Here is another Alternative...As we all know 'PCI Device' (any Multimedia/Video or other form of it with the 'Question Mark' there) is simply a Generic Term for a Device that may or may not exist in your Computer Hardware. In order to Identify same you can use a program called 'PC Wizard' that will show you what the Device is (usually). PC Wizard is available at: http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php and if it does show you what the device is I suggest that you type the Name of the Device as closely as possible in Google Search Engine (e.g. PCI Soundcard 123) followed by the word(s) 'Driver' or 'Driver Download' and usually it will respond with a reference to various Driver Websites. My favorite is http://www.driverguide.com and I usually find exactly what I need there!
