I am currently migrating hardware between 4 boxes. On a particular computer I am working on I am having issues with the boot record.

THe computer has 2 hard disks. One is just a data drive, the other is Windows, programs, etc. When I take out the data drive I am unable to boot into Windows. Obviously the drive I take out has the boot record on it. How can I either create a new boot record or copy the existing one over to the actual WindowsXP drive?

You should be able to disconnect the DATA drive from the system and then boot from your Windows install media disc and use the repair console feature to run the fixmbr command.

This should then repair the master boot record and make that partition active.

Once finished, then you should be able to boot from that drive, just press the reset button or use the CTRL + ALT + DEL keys.

I figured as much. Either fixboot or fixmbr. Thank you for that clarification!
