what is Thumbs.db file?

in most of my folders i have a file named Thumbs.db. what is this file? i've never noticed this file before. is it a virus? i've tried deleting them before but they somehow do not get removed and remain there.

It's used in 2000/XP. When you view pictures in thumbnail view it saves the pics in there for quicker access.

To turn this feature off:
Click the Start button.
Select Control Panel.
Select Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Do not cache thumbnails".
Click the OK button.
