I am running XP home edition, and for some reason, the IP address suddenly gets dropped. Address winds up being 0.0.0.0>0.0.0.0 on cable modem.

When this happens, I can ping 127.0.0.1, but nothing else. Called the cable company, and they said nothing was wrong.

Could this be some sort of malware no one knows about yet?

Or

Is XP having a senior moment??

It is just frustrating to have this happen and having to reboot to go 3 web pages, bookmark the page where is stalls, reboot and go to the bookmark. and reboot and . . .

Suggestions are welcomed.

Do you have Symantec's Norton AntiVirus installed/uninstalled?

To resolve this problem, perform the following steps:
Start a registry editor (Start->Run:"regedit.exe").
Navigate to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp" registry subkey.
Double-click "DependOnService".
Remove SYMTDI from the list, then click OK.

Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Or if that does not help, try this: http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/w2knoaip.html
