problem with playing .mpeg,.dat files in redhat 9

I have insatalled redhat 9(Shrike) its kernel version is 2.4.20-8,
and it cannot play .mpeg,.dat files .
i have installed XMMS for playing audio files but which software to use for video files. And how to install that.

How about Xine, is this the one you tried? Or have you tried it?

I really like Xine...it's solid and it works great...Doesn't Kaffeine also play video files?

mplayer is a good video player available for linux. it can files in lots of format provided you download the relevant codecs for them.
you can get mplayer from mplayerhq.hu

No way, are you serious. How sad? Why would MPlayers be shutting down. That's a sad news for the open source community.
