Security Software Shutting Down Web Services

Recommended Posts

After fighting off a browser hijack infection, I installed lots of security software: AVG Antivirus, Symantec Firewall, SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, and a new HOSTS file.

I got rid of all my infections, but today I notice that I can't do some things on the Web that I used to be able to do. Such as:

--> on eBay, I can't contact other members (via eBayISAPI.dll)

--> on eBay, I can't search for completed items

--> on half.com, I can't contact other members (via a CGI script)

Whenever I try to do these things, IE6 spits back a 'page cannot be displayed' page.

--> also, I can't use the eBay toolbar at all

I'm assuming that something I installed is blocking my access to these things. So I tried disabling the firewall, but I'm still blocked. I tried changing the name of the new HOSTS file to HOSTS.OLD and then rebooting, but I'm still blocked (and I see that Windows didn't create a new HOSTS file for me).

I'm stumped. I'm thrilled to have a secure computer. But I don't want to be blocked from doing essential Web tasks.

Please help!

Thanks.

Have you checked the IE settings for Internet level?

Can you access those pages from other browser (eg. firefox, opera)?

The HOSTS should only contain this:

127.0.0.1 localhost

Does your hijack this log have suspicious entries?
