IIS5.1/XP Pro - can't run ASP

This started a couple of days ago, for no apparent reason: no new programs, change in IIS settings, administrators, etc, and no otherwise-noticed viruses or other attacks.

I tried working with the IIS snap-in, first trying to stop-then-restart IIS. At some point, Default SMTP Virtual Server had a red X next to it; later it didn't, but still no action. I eventually removed IIS and reinstalled, and still no action -- I cannot even get to the IIS "home page."

Suggestions?
