I have a choice of win2k pro or winxp pro to put on my gaming machine. I have tested them a few years back and win2k had better fps for games. On the newer games which os is better? my rig is athlon 2600+, geforce 6800 gt, 1 gig dual channel ram.

There shouldn't be much of an FPS difference, sounds to me like outdated drivers....

As for which is better. They are pretty much the same.

I'd go with XP tho because:

1. Some companies may not offer support for 2000. (This is unlikely since they are so similar...but 2000 is not a home OS).
2. NTVDM in XP supports sound emulation and CLI/OP for old DOS games. The sound emulation is terrible so you'll have to use VDMSound or DosBox anyway but it's in there.
3. Microsoft theoretically provides application compatibility updates....I say theoretically because it's been quite awhile since they've provided an update. 2000 has the same ability but it's not as obvious.
4. Developers will likely focus on using XP for their development machines and for game testing more than for 2000.
5. Microsoft will provide more resources to hotfixes for Windows XP than Windows 2000, this is a given and a must for online gaming and broadband connections.
