xp login password problem

I recently installed xp as an upgrade from the win 2000. I recieved this computer from a friend and never needed to use her password (somehow login only required pressing the cancel button) but I am certain that I have her correct password. but the password doesn't work!!! during installation of xp I don't recall if it asked for a an admin login name and pw... I installed OS from a cd and don't have a bootable floppy. please please please tell me how I can login to the xp OS??? TYA!!!
