MechWarrior 4 with Windows XP?

Can anyone get Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance to play on Windows XP? It won't even load and keeps saying that I need to get DirectX 8 but I already have a more advanced version of DirectX. I have another game (Hot Rod American Street Drag) that also says the same thing... any advice?
