System halts at "finding module dependencies"

I had a Red Hat 9 installation which got corrupted

So I installed another Redhat 9
But it hangs at "Finding module dependencies"

I tried loading the OS over n over again without any success
I even tried with LILO intstead of grub

Sometimes it performs disk check and halts at 10% or less

Now I am stranded
Can anyone help

I am a sort of newbie
