My wife's father gave us a Canon PowerShot A85 digital camera for Christmas. On the back of the box it stated you could use it with Windows and Mac.

I've never fooled with digital cameras in my life, let alone knew how to download the image files to a computer. I got the batteries and flash reader installed and took some great shots, but was really sweating it out on the drive home whether I would be able to download the pictures to SuSE via the provided USB cable. If I couldn't figure it out then we'd just have to suffer because I will not install Windows just to download pictures.

I tried mounting the flash reader and that didn't work. Then I read online about gphoto2. I opened up a terminal, found it's options and did:

gphoto2 --get-all-raw-data

And all the files downloaded right to my home directory! I thought this was gonna be hard! Check out the cameras gphoto2 supports:

What the heck is a "Hot Wheels" camera and how can it support that when so many other things are lacking? laugh

Gphoto2 supports a wide range of cameras that do not allow direct mounting as a usb device. My Nikon 4300 just needs to be mounted as a usb device. This is the reason why it is not listed. On the other hand, my Kodak needs to use gphoto2 to download and edit photos right of the camera properly.

Multi-card readers also generally work. The issue witrh some of them is that Linux, depending on what distro you are using, will want to read only the first slot on the reader. However, with a little work most of the slots will work when a card is inserted in the device on boot.

Do all multi-card readers work? I'm thinking of getting one for my system but not sure if its compatible. Don't wanna spend the money only to discover that it doesn't work with my Linux box.

Nice camera danleff, I have teh same one. smile

Most cardreaders work as a removeble drive.

hotwheels camera is supported because some linux hackers son got one and he they wrote driver. actully it probably a logitech cam that's already supported.

My elcheapo card reader works. Linux assigns, as egorgry stated, the mount points as a removable drive. I made sue mine had CF first, which are my cards. SD works as well. Assignments when you read dmesg are usually sdb1. sdb2...

..and yes, this camera is fantastic!

Did some more research on this and found out SuSE and most of the distros already have a frontend for gphoto2 called Digikam! What a neat program! After configuring it to recognize your camera, it mounts the picture files on the CompactFlash, and you can drag and drop the ones you want to download right into a folder!

I'm sure you old hands at this digital photography stuff already knew about Digikam, but since all this is new to me, I thought I'd share it with anyone else who might come along and not know. smile

Nice to see you're enjoying the camera. It's a nice one too, I got the same one for my parents and it takes great pictures. gphoto is such a great app I use it all the time. The generate web page tool is great.

Digikam is a nice frontend. There are others as well. It's nice to find these jewels is it not?

It sure is!

Y'all know how it is... You run into a new challenge like this, having been put into the position of finding a Linux alternative to something that is normally done with Windows, and you want and need for there to be an answer.

Even though my father-in-law knows we use Linux, (and he doesn't know Linux), he makes the common mistake of telling me how to do it in Windows, saying, " You just open up, "My Computer," and look for "E" or "F" drive...blah...blah...blah..."

And the whole time he's telling me, I'm trying to figure out how to get it done from the command line, and having anxiety about it.

Then I find gphoto2 and Digikam, and it gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling I felt the first time I had the pleasure of permanently nuking and paving a Windows partition to make more room for Linux... smile
