machine wants to scandisk on start up all the time

hi all,i just put a new opperating system (win 98 SE) onto a 20 gig HDD,all was fine untill McAfee did an automatic update,now when the computer boots up it sais, one or more drives may have bad sectors press any key to run scandisk,and away it goes,i have ran Adaware that found a load of trash in there got rid of them,im wondering if any one may be able to help me with some advice on this matter please.be well ... peace and happiness to you all.
