Sound problems with Hercules Muse XL

Hello there.
I'm having a little problem with my sound. I'm running Mandrake 10.0 and I have ALSA 1.0.7 installed. My sound card is Hercules Muse XL. The problem I have is that the sound seems a bit, well, wrong! It's like the bass is cranked to the max or as if I had extremely dusty speakers. Any ideas what I should do? I know the card is fine, because it played alright in Windows, but there is no way in hell I am installing that again (recently had an..."unkind" experience with Windows and IE)!
