NooB to linux (best distro)

i'm new to linux & wanted to check it out. what distro would you suggest? i noticed the thread below that had suse & mandrake. i tried mandrake a long time ago but didn't have the time to dig in, now i do. so, what's the best 'free' linux distro?

i really just want to learn linux, etc. i think i'm gonna try mandrake 10.1.
i have redhat 9.1 (i think) at home. probably put that on tonite until i get mandrake 10.1
