Windows XP Pro Upgrade Question

I am upgrading a PC from Win2K to XP Pro. However, I am also upgrading the hardware. Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't I start the install on the old system; have it copy the setup files, but when it restarts for the first time, shut it down, change over the hardware and then start it and continue the setup of windows?

The new hardware would be in it before windows starts to install.
