email doesn't show pictures

When trying to view email that contains a picture all we get is a box with a little x in the upper left hand corner. This happens with email from lotus notes as well as email generated from the internet. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Is the link valid? Is your mail server removing (possibly) harmful attachments? Is your mail server parsing HTML mail to text? Is your email client properly configured?

Need some more info here.
