I've tried booting and installing Windows 98 SE over and existing
XP OS. It won't let me do this without going to DOS (I don't
have the operators manual) Anyone know how this can be done?

If I recall correctly, Win98 won't install over an NT based OS (it's been a long time since I used Win9x).

You'll have to blank the target hard drive before you boot off the 98 CD and begin the installation.

1. Boot from a Win 98 floppy (www.bootdisk.com)
2. Run FDISK
3. Delete all Non-Dos partitions (this will delete, OS, programs and any data)
4. Create a new Primary DOS Partition
5. Reboot and format new partition
6. Run setup from 98 CD to install windows 98.

Are you trying to dual boot 98 and XP? Or trying to install a fresh copy of 98? You can't install 98 over XP for a dual boot system. 98 must be first.

Will that work for XP to XP to?
I've tried setting BIOS such that it boot from CD, but when I insert my XP CD, that didn't happen.

If i use bootdisk, can I do a clean install of XP?

Thanks

Darkhall and Peterh you are a wise men, that info was spot on. Peterh said to boot from the floppy but this does not work, I normaly reformat a machine this way, but not this time. You must boot from the cd and do everything from the cd not the floppy disk. So to anyone else doing this boot from the cd as Darkhall said and then follow peterh from step 2.

98 over xp

dont bother to format any of the disk
jusj follow the setps

1. insert bootable disk (win98)
2. go on the tab start comp with cd rome support.
3. catch the location of your win98's setup.exe.
4. just run the following command

setup -nr -is -ie

and you will install win98 over winxp smile
