Sims 2 wont work after instillation

i have installed sims 2 numerous times and a little message pops up when i want to play saying cant detect something or rather i deleted all back up stuff like it ses in the booklet to do. i have windows XP. does anyone else have this problem and how do i fix it??? please help it is driving me insane!!!!!!!!!
